PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills, values and knowledge required by people in the sub-field of Forestry and/or wood technology who must be able to dry lumber in lumber drying kilns applying appropriate drying schedule with all possible stages.

People credited with this unit standard are able:
  • Heat up the kiln till the lumber has attained the prescribed temperature.
  • Run the relevant drying cycle with all its stages.
  • Determine endpoint and terminate drying cycle.
  • Apply treatment to equalize moisture contents of planks in load at the end of the drying cycle.
  • Apply a conditioning treatment, after the equalizing treatment (where relevant) to release drying.
  • Keep the appropriate records of the drying process.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Heat up the kiln till the lumber has attained the prescribed temperature. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Heat supply, humidity supply, airspeed control, heating up rate, endpoint of phase. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The heating up process is performed according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The planks in the load of lumber to be dried have all attained the prescribed temperature according to schedule. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Run the relevant drying cycle with all its stages. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Kiln controls settings, moisture content monitoring for step changes with time, or moisture content stages. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The relevant drying cycle with all its stages is performed according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The process of running the drying cycle is performed using prescribed procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The conditions in the kiln are adjusted at the appropriate times and results in correctly dried lumber with the prescribed moisture content. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Determine endpoint and terminate drying cycle. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Average moisture content, target moisture content, sample moisture contents. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The endpoint and termination of the drying cycle is performed in a manner that ensures that the drying of the lumber is stopped at the right time. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The process of determining endpoint and termination of drying cycle is performed according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The dried lumber has the prescribed average moisture content according to quality requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Apply treatment to equalize moisture contents of planks in load at the end of the drying cycle. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Moisture contents of samples, driest sample, target moisture content, dry bulb and wet bulb settings, equilibrium moisture content and duration of treatment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The average moisture contents of planks in the load fall within the prescribed range for the dried product according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The equalizing process is performed in line with operative company procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Apply a conditioning treatment, after the equalizing treatment (where relevant) to release drying stresses in the lumber. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Stress testes, dry bulb and wet bulb temperatures, steam/water spray, steam bath, time. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Drying stresses in planks in the kiln load are released to prescribed levels according to quality requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    This process is performed using the prescribed procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Keep the appropriate records of the drying process. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Results of calculations on sample data, readings on controls, drying rate, final average moisture content, final moisture content distribution. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Records of all the required data for specific kiln drying runs are kept according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Records kept meet the company's operative record keeping procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The records kept contain all the prescribed data according to worksite procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 4 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency. Only an Assessor with suitable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
