PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills, values and knowledge required by people in the sub-field of Forestry and/or wood technology who must be able to control lumber drying process in Lumber Mill.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Schedule the appropriate lumber to be accessed for the drying process, dried and delivered to the next stage of production in the lumber mill.
  • Ensure the availability of the required equipment for and the correctness of the stacking process, to prevent or minimize distortion during drying.
  • Use samples to control and monitor the drying process.
  • Ensure an appropriate and sustained steam supply to the lumber drying kilns.
  • Control preparation, loading and unloading of lumber drying kilns.
  • Apply effective measures to prevent or minimize drying defects in lumber.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF level 2 or equivalent.
  • Lumber drying knowledge and skills equivalent to NQF Level 2 requirements.
  • Knowledge of workplace procedures, safety and health measures and environmental.
  • Management principles in the lumber drying area relevant to NQF Level 2 requirements.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The scope of this unit standard covers the "Range" mentioned in the specific outcomes above.
  • The typical context of this unit standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF Level 3 in the activity of Lumber Drying.
  • The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. Level 3, is appropriate because:
    > For foundational competence the learner has to demonstrate a well developed range of skills and ability to make comparisons and interpret available information.
    > For practical competence the learner has to demonstrate the ability to operate in a number of contexts, some of which may be non-routine, make significant choices from a wide range of procedures and co-ordinate with others.
    > For reflexive competence he/she has to demonstrate the ability to handle significant responsibility for quantity and quality of one's own output and in this case, i.e. Lumber Milling, for those of others.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Schedule lumber for the drying process, dried and delivered to the next stage of production in the lumber mill.

    Wood quality-high, structural, dimensions, volumes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The scheduling process uses the prescribed procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct volumes, dimensions and quality of lumber are accessed dried and delivered at the prescribed time according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The scheduling process is performed within the prescribed time limits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Lumber is scheduled according to production requirements and targets. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Ensure the availability of the required equipment for of the stacking process to prevent distortion during drying. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Equipment includes kiln trolleys, pulling/pushing equipment, mechanical condition, condition of stacking bays/mechanical stackers; stack base supports, levelness, strength; stickers-dimensions, material, spacing, alignment; plank dimensions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Equipment is available according to production schedule. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The stacking equipment provided and the stacking quality achieved complies with the prescribed requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    These activities are performed within the prescribed time limits. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Use samples to control and monitor the drying process. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Representative-flat, radial or half flat/radial sawn, number; dimension of samples, clean surfaces; moisture sections, kiln samples; position in load wet side dry side, top, middle, bottom; record weights, green, ovendry, intermittent; calculations-ovendry weight, green moisture content, weight at target moisture content; moisture readings of resistance meters, electronic monitors. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Samples in the lumber drying process are used to select, prepare, place according to prescribed procedures and techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The required information regarding the drying rate and moisture content of the lumber being dried is available at the prescribed time according to quality requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The selection, preparation, placement and use of samples take place within the prescribed time limits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Drying conditions are adjusted according to sample of the drying process. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Ensure an appropriate and sustained steam supply to the lumber drying kilns. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Steam pipes, valves, heating coils, steam spray nozzles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The steam supply at the lumber drying kilns are of the prescribed quality and quantity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Constant steam supply is achieved according to according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The activity of ensuring this supply is performed within the prescribed time limits. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Control preparation, loading and unloading of lumber drying kilns. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Kiln controls for temperature, humidity, air venting, baffles, moisture content readings; positioning of trolley with load in kiln, shutting kiln door, opening door, baffles, disconnect controls, unload trolley with lumber stack.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    These activities are performed within the prescribed time limits. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The kiln with the trolley with its stack of lumber to be dried, are in the prescribed condition for the drying process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The preparation, loading and unloading of lumber drying kilns are performed according to standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 6 
    Apply effective measures to prevent or minimize drying defects in lumber. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Product range requirements-high quality, structural, crating, segregation of wood on inherent quality before drying, green moisture content and its distribution, stacking quality, kiln schedules-low temp slow, high temp fast, additional, treatments-equalizing, conditioning, kiln conditions, regarding uniformity of airflow, temperature and humidity, Drying defects, distortion, surface and internal checking and cracking, collapse, drying stresses, discolouration.

    Measures to prevent/minimize defects are according to worksite procedures.

    The dried quality of the products comply with the prescribed specifications regarding the relevant quality.

    These activities are performed within the prescribed time limits. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 4 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency. Only an Assessor with suitable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
