PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will be useful for people wish to complete a NQF Level 3 Learnership in Saw Doctoring.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Explain the technology applicable when using grinding wheels made from advanced/specialized materials, in saw and cutter maintenance in the Lumber Mill.
  • Explain the construction and maintenance of grinding wheels made from specialised materials.
  • Classify grinding wheels made from advanced/specialised materials.
  • Set up an advanced/specialised material grinding wheel on a grinding machine.
  • Sharpen cutting tools using grinding wheels of advanced/specialised materials. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competence in Mathematical and Communication Skills equivalent to NQF Level 2.
  • An understanding of the detail of Saw Doctoring in the Lumber Mill.
  • Skills competencies equivalent to NQF Learnership Levels 2 of Saw Doctoring.
  • Knowledge of workplace procedures, health and safety measures, and environmental management principles equivalent to NQF Level 2.

    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The environment including equipment, tools and instruments which can be described as the Saw Doctor Shop of a Lumber Mill.
  • All personnel involved in the activities in the Saw Doctor Shop.
  • All material handled and processed in the .Saw Doctor Shop.
  • All the prescribed work place procedures and safety, health and environmental management procedures relating to the Saw Doctor Shop.
  • All the prescribed saw blade and cutter routine maintenance procedures and schedules, equipment, tools and materials used in the Saw Doctor Shop.
  • All the saws, knives and cutters handled and processed in the Saw Doctor Shop.
  • All the grinding wheels used in the Saw Doctor Shop of a Lumber Mill.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF Level 3 in Saw Doctoring and specifically in the technology applicable when using grinding wheels made from advanced/specialized materials, in saw and cutter maintenance in the Lumber Mill.

    The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. NQF Level 3, is appropriate because:
  • For foundational competence the Learner has to demonstrate a well developed range of skills and the ability to make comparisons and interpret available information.
  • For practical competence the Learner has to show the ability to operate in a number of contexts, some of which may be non-routine, make significant choices from a wide range of procedures and co-ordinate with others.
  • For reflexive competence the Learner has to demonstrate the ability to handle significant responsibility for quantity and quality of the Learner's own output under general supervision, and possibly that of others.

    The nature of the tasks performed, the scope of learning involved and the required responsibility levels, are consistent with those generally defined for NQF Level 3.

    An advanced/pecialised material grinding wheel on a grinding machine in the Saw Shop is set according to industry standards.

    Sharpen cutting tools using grinding wheels of advanced/specialised materials, in the Saw Shop of the Lumber Mill.

  • Cutting tools include saw blades, planer knives, profile cutters, chipper knives.
  • Sharpening/grinding procedure.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Chipper knives are sharpened safely using grinding wheels of advanced/specialised materials, in the Saw Shop of the Lumber Mill. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Profile cutters are sharpened safely using grinding wheels of advance/specialised materials, in the Saw Shop of the Lumber Mill. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Planer knives are sharpened safely using grinding wheels of advanced/specialised materials, in the Saw Shop of the Lumber Mill. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Saw blades are sharpened safely using grinding wheels of advanced/specialised materials, in the Saw Shop of the Lumber Mill. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Correct PPE is worn minimize injuries during sharpening process. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An employed individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, the relevant responsible person in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. An unemployed Learner must arrange with the training provider for assessment.
  • Anyone assessing a Learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor for this purpose by the ETQA.
  • The manner/method and source of providing the learning that will enable compliance with the requirements of this Unit Standard, must be accredited by the ETQA.
  • Moderation of the abovementioned assessment will be performed in the manner and by the moderator/s accredited for this purpose by the ETQA.
  • Assessment can be performed by means of oral testing, written tests and on-the-job observation. Formative assessment can be carried out during and after achievement of each specific outcome, and summative assessment at the conclusion of the training programme for this Unit Standard. Assessment will take place at a venue or workplace designated by the relevant assessor(s).
