PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills, values and knowledge required by people in the sub-field of Forestry and/or wood technology who must be able to describe lumber drying kiln types, their construction materials and auxiliary equipment.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Describe the basic kiln types commonly in use, and how they function.
  • Describe the construction materials used to build kilns for lumber drying, and their respective advantages and disadvantages.
  • Explain the standard methods that could be used to load kilns.
  • Describe the auxiliary equipment necessary, and its functioning, for air circulation, heat supply, humidification and kiln controls.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Mathematical Literacy and Communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Lumber drying knowledge and skills equivalent to NQF Level 2 requirements.
  • Knowledge of workplace procedures, safety and health measures and environmental.
  • Management principles in the lumber drying area relevant to NQF Level 2 requirements.

  • The scope of this unit standard covers the "Range" as mentioned in the specific outcomes above.
  • The typical context of this unit standard relates to the training of a learner at NQF Level 3 in the activity of Lumber Drying.
  • The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. NQF Level 3, is appropriate because:
    > For foundational competence the learner has to demonstrate a well developed range of skills and ability to make comparisons and interpret available information
    > For practical competence the learner has to demonstrate the ability to operate in a number of contexts, some of which may be non-routine, make significant choices from a wide range of procedures and co-ordinate with others.
    > For reflexive competence he/she has to demonstrate the ability to handle significant responsibility for quantity and quality of one's own output and in this case, i.e. lumber milling, for those of others.

    Properties of each kiln are explained according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe the construction materials used to build kilns for lumber drying, and their respective advantages and disadvantages. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Clay brick, concrete block, aluminium and steel, wood/board products. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Material with which the kilns are built is described using lumber drying terminology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Structural materials that used to build lumber drying kilns are named according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Effect of material type used on the performance of kilns is explained according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Advantages and disadvantages of the materials used are described according to quality procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain the standard methods that could be used to load kilns. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Trolleys on rails, load on plenum basis; end loading, side loading; loads going in end-wise, loads going in side-wise.

    Different methods to load a lumber drying kiln are identified according to worksite procedures.

    Differences in loading methods to a lumber drying kiln are explained according to worksite procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Describe the auxiliary equipment necessary, and its functioning, for air circulation, heat supply, humidification and kiln controls. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Fans, motor, belts, external, internal, vents, baffles; steam supply pipes, valves, heating coils; steam spray nozzles; dry bulb, wet bulb, mechanical recorders, electronic recorders.

    The function of equipment is explained in terms of its role in the kiln. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 4 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency. Only an Assessor with suitable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
