PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills, values and knowledge required by people in the sub-field of Forestry and/or wood technology who must be able to describe the properties of wood related to drying.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Describe the microscopic structure of wood.
  • Explain how wood holds water using the correct terminology.
  • Explain why and how wood shrinks and swells ("moves").
  • Describe the influence of all the above factors on the distortion of wood.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Lumber drying knowledge and skills equivalent to NQF Level 1 requirements.
  • Knowledge of workplace procedures, safety and health measures and environmental.
  • Management principles in the lumber drying area relevant to NQF Level 1 requirements.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The scope of this unit standard covers the "Range" as mentioned in the specific outcomes above.
  • The typical context of this unit standard relates to the training of a learner at NQF Level 3 in the activity of Lumber Drying.
  • The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. NQF Level 3, is appropriate because:
    > For foundational competence the learner has to demonstrate a well developed range of skills and ability to make comparisons and interpret available information.
    > For practical competence the learner has to demonstrate the ability to operate in a number of contexts, some of which may be non-routine, make significant choices from a wide range of procedures and co-ordinate with others.
    > For reflexive competence he/she has to demonstrate the ability to handle significant responsibility for quantity and quality of one's own output and in this case, i.e. lumber milling, for those of others.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Describe the microscopic structure of wood. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Cells include:
  • Cell walls, cell openings; different cell types.

    Planes include:
  • 3 planes of wood i.e. tangential, radial and longitudinal, knots, reaction wood, spiral grain, juvenile wood.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Wood structure is described in terms of cell types, cell walls and cell openings in relation to its drying behaviour during the drying process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Wood structure is described in terms of types of planes and the influence of each plane on the drying process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The differences among the different wood planes are explained in terms the effect of each on the wood structure in relation to moisture absorption. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain how wood holds water using the correct terminology. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Free water, bound water, cell structure, relative humidity; equilibrium moisture content. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The differences between free water and bound water are explained in terms of the chemistry of wood. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The concept of relative humidity is described in relation to how wood hold water. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The concept of equilibrium moisture content is explained in terms of how wood holds water. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain why and how wood shrinks and swells ("moves"). 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Moisture content, relative humidity, equilibrium moisture content; cell structure -cell walls, wood density, three planes of wood.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Wood shrinkage is explained in terms of cell structure and the effect of wood plane in terms of humidity and moisture content. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Reasons for wood shrinkage are given in terms of moisture content and equilibrium moisture content. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The swelling of wood is explained in terms of cell structure, wood plane and relative humidity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Reasons for the swelling of wood are given in terms of moisture content and equilibrium moisture content and relative humidity. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Describe the influence of all the above factors on the distortion of wood. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The concept of wood distortion is explained in terms of humidity, moisture content, cells structure and wood planes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effect of moisture content in wood on its shape is explained according to quality requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The effect of relative humidity and cell structure of wood on its shape is explained according to quality requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The influence of moisture content, relative humidity, cell structure and type of plane of wood on the distortion of wood during drying is described according to quality requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 4 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency. Only an Assessor with suitable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
