PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner is capable of correctly controlling all relevant lumber grading processes in the Lumber Mill.

The successful achievement of this unit standard will enable the learner to effectively and efficiently perform his/her task as the person responsible for the grading process.

The Lumber Milling industry urgently requires appropriately trained persons to perform the relevant grading tasks in its lumber grading facilities.

The achievement of this unit standard will contribute towards a situation where all lumber graders are correctly trained and qualified to perform the visual lumber grading process according to industry accepted norms. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that a Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard will be able to demonstrate:
  • Competence in mathematical and communication skills equivalent to the NQF Level 2 requirements.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the specifics of the lumber grading process.
  • The further knowledge and skills competencies equivalent to NQF Level 2 requirements for lumber grading.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The typical scope of this Unit Standard covers the "Range" as specified in the specific outcomes of this unit standard.
  • The typical context of this unit standard is the training of a Learner at NQF Level 3 in the activity of Lumber Grading.
  • The level assigned to this unit standard, i.e. NQF Level 3, is appropriate because:
    > For foundational competence the learner has to demonstrate a range of well developed skills.
    > For practical competence the learner has to show ability to operate in a number of contexts, some of which may be non-routine, make significant choices from a wide range of procedures, and co-ordinate with others.
    > For reflexive competence the learner has to demonstrate the ability to handle full responsibility for quantity and quality of own output, under general supervision, with the possibility of being responsible for the output of others.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare the lumber grading facility according to company procedures. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Visual grading facilities include grading table, chain, moisture meters, measuring equipment, marking equipment and materials; Mechanical grading facilities include calibration, feeding mechanisms, stress identification and marking material. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The facilities for the lumber grading process are checked to ensure the correct procedure of preparing the facilities is followed, as per the range statement. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment is prepared and made ready for use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment is made ready for use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Relevant pre-inspection checklists are processed as per company procedure. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Bring lumber on site for grading as per company procedure. Check that the products to be graded have been correctly identified, collected and presented at the grading facility. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Dried lumber storage facilities, lumber moving equipment, lumber receiving area including stack bearers, lumber feeding aids, devices; lumber dimensions, species where relevant. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Dried lumber for grading is moved to the receiving area in a safe manner by using the appropriate equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Dried lumber is placed into a lumber feeding device. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Collection, identification and presentation at the grading facility is done in the correct manner. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Control the actual grading process. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Relevant grading rules, readings, measurement, pre-test markings where relevant, stress identification, grader's markings, marking equipment and materials.

    Grading process is applied in a manner that is consistent with safety rules.

    Grading rules are described.

    Grading rules are applied in a manner that results in a graded product. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Supervise the correct sorting and assembling into parcels of graded lumber with similar dimensions and graders' markings.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The sorting process results in correct classification and assembling into bundels of products having similar dimensions and graders` markings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The orderly composition of consignments for dispatch results from the Supervisor`s oversight of the process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The graded products are assembled into bundels of similar dimensions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Supervise the correct stacking, stamping/marking and strapping of graded and marked products into prescribed size parcels for dispatch. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Stacking area and facilities, stack sizes, grade marks, positions of grade marks on lumber, marking equipment and materials, strapping equipment, materials and methods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Stacking, stamped/marked and strapping of stacks of graded and marked lumber results according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The graded and marked products are stacked, stamped/marked and strapped according to standard operating procedures, or as company procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Products of prescribed grades and dimensions are placed in the same stacks and correctly stamped/marked and strapped for dispatch, as directed by the supervisor. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The orderly composition of consignments for dispatch is controlled by the Supervisor`s oversight. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An employed learner who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform the relevant person/s, to request management to arrange for his/her assessment by the relevant assessor/s accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. An unemployed learner must arrange with the provider of his/her training
    for assessment by similarly accredited assessor/s. Assessment can be performed by means of oral testing, written tests and on-the-job observation. Formative assessment can be carried out during and after the achievement of each specific outcome, and summative assessment at the conclusion of the training programme for this Unit
    Standard. Assessment will take place at the venue or workplace designated by the relevant assessor/s.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor by the above-mentioned ETQA.
  • The manner/method and source of the provisioning of the learning that will enable compliance with this Unit Standard, must be accredited by the above-mentioned ETQA.
  • Moderation of the above-mentioned assessment will be performed in the manner and by the moderator/s accredited for this purpose by the above-mentioned ETQA.
