PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The Unit Standard will be useful for people who wish to complete at NQF Level 1 Learnership in Lumber Milling.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Understand the purpose and set up of green lumber crosscutting facilities.
  • Set-up and operate green lumber cross cutting/trimming equipment to prescribed standards and cut lumber to the required lengths and quality standards.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Mathematical Literacy and Communication at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.
  • Understanding of the detail of the Lumber Milling process, especially in the Wet Mill area.
  • Workplace procedures, health and safety measures, and environmental management principles equivalent to NQF Level 1.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole environment which can be described as the Wet Mill of a lumber mill and specifically the green lumber crosscutting/trimming facilities of the Wet Mill.
  • All personnel involved in the activities of the Wet Mill.
  • All material handled and processed into and from the lumber trimming facilities of the Wet Mill.
  • All the prescribed work place procedures and safety, health and environmental management procedures relating to the green lumber crosscutting/trimming facilities of the Wet Mill.
  • All prescribed routine set up, maintenance and lubrication procedures and schedules, tools and equipment used in green lumber crosscutting/trimming facilities of the Wet Mill.
  • All the prescribed dimensions and quality specifications for trimmed green lumber products.
  • All prescribed product measuring and recording procedures, tools and standards.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner in setting up and operating the green lumber crosscutting/trimming facilities in the Wet Mill:

    The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. NQF Level 1, is appropriate because:
  • For foundational competence the Learner has to demonstrate a well developed range of skills and the ability to make comparisons and interpret available information.
  • For practical competence the Learner has to show the ability to operate in a number of contexts, some of which may be non-routine, make significant choices from a wide range of procedures and co-ordinate with others.
  • For reflexive competence the Learner has to demonstrate the ability to handle significant responsibility for quantity and quality of the Learner's own output under general supervision, and possibly that of others.
  • The nature of the tasks performed, the scope of learning involved and the required responsibility levels, are consistent with those generally defined for NQF Level 1.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Collect all the prescribed setting up tools and equipment and cutting tools for the crosscutting green lumber. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The required tools and equipment and log cutting tools used for the crosscutting green lumber are gathered according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tools and equipment and log cutting tools used for the crosscutting green lumber are inspected to check for damages according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ancillary materials handling equipment is collected and inspected to confirm good working condition according to worksite procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Set up the green lumber crosscutting equipment and install the required cutting tools, to prescribed standards, in the prescribed manner (Green lumber = board, flitch, slab). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Green lumber crosscutting equipment is safely set according to industry standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Green lumber crosscutting equipment set-up is explained according to worksite procedures 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The required cutting tools are installed to prescribed standards, in the prescribed manner. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Operate the crosscutting equipment in the prescribed manner to produce lumber of the prescribed lengths. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Correct personal protective clothing is worn for protection according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Crosscutting equipment is safely operated according to company's procedures according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Lumber of the prescribed lengths is cut according to industry standards according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Quality control measures are applied to ensure production of good quality products according to worksite procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Carry out prescribed routine maintenance and lubrication of board crosscutting and ancillary handling equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Maintenance of primary board crosscutting equipment is carried out according to the drawn schedule. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Lubrication is done on primary board crosscutting equipment according to company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Required documentation is completed according to company' procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 4 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency. Only an Assessor with suitable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
