PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this Unit Standard is to enable construction tilers to prepare substrate layers and lay precast paving. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
FETC NQF Level 2 literacy and numeracy competencies. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
1. Gravel materials include natural gravels and insitu materials.
2. Bedding material includes commercial graded sands, and washed river aggregates.
3. Compaction of substrate to include for cement stabilisation.
4. Precast pavers include clay and concrete pavers in various thicknesses and shapes, including interlocking, square, and rectangular.
5. Cutting of edges to include methods of cutting, grinding, and guillotining.
6. Gap filling to include use of concrete, mortar, fine sand with and without cement.
7. Compaction of paving to include the use of vibrating plate or drum rollers.
