PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Qualifying learners are capable of demonstrating knowledge and identifying of tractor and agricultural machinery tyre types and sizes; demonstrating knowledge of tyre damage, repair techniques, and maintenance requirements; demonstrating knowledge of tractor wheels; and remove and replace tractor tyres. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
Context:
  • Tyre patterns - basic lug pattern - directional; angle of lugs, length of lug to centre line, industrial lug; grass or turf pattern; flotation and soil compaction; front non-driving tyres - tri-rib, broken tri-rib, multi-rib.
  • Tyre sizes - measurement relating to rim diameter and tyre section width, low profile aspect ratio, side wall markings - speed and loading indexing characteristics.
  • Tyre construction - cross ply - rayon and nylon; radial - rayon and nylon; steel belted plies; beads, side walls, apexes and chafers; rubber compounds.
  • Dynamic rolling circumference - matching tyre circumferences for four wheel drive and wheel assisted machines; front tyre lead - performance, safe handling, mechanical considerations of the machine.
  • Tyre valve types - water valves, dry valves, tubeless stems, tube stems.
  • Tyre wear - under inflation wear pattern, over inflation wear pattern.
  • Tyre rupture - broken tyre walls, lug damage through spinning, staking, ozone cracking, petroleum and herbicide deterioration.
  • Tyre repair methods - permanent vulcanising, cold chemical cure, temporary boots.
  • Tyre maintenance criteria - pressures, hard surface, soft surface, ballast, antifreeze, water, calcium chloride, petroleum product and herbicide contamination, deterioration prevention.
  • Rim and wheel disc configurations - single well rims, double rims, wheel discs and settings, power adjusted rims.
  • Safety precautions when jacking - safe jacking points, jack capacities, safe stands, removal of wheels.
  • Safe removal of tyres - safe working practices, selection and use of tyre tools and equipment.
  • Wheel rim maintenance - descaling, painting, straightening, welds, rivet replacement.
  • Safe fitting of wheels - safe working practices, selection and use of tyre tools and equipment, use of a safety cage, inflation procedure and pressure.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The standard describes competent performance in identifying of tractor and agricultural machinery tyre types and sizes, and lay down the criteria by which competence should be judged, as well as the range of circumstances in which competence should be demonstrated.

    Integrated assessment methods and tools will allow the candidate to demonstrate that she/he has acquired knowledge of and can safely and effectively apply competence identified in this unit standard.

  • Written reports (e.g. tests, exams, case studies, projects, registers, logbooks, workbooks)

    These methods must be carefully selected based on the purpose of the assessment (for example, the written method of assessing knowledge or on-job demonstration of practical competence). The assessment must integrate a number of different methods in order to give the assessor reliable and valid proof of competence and evidence of required attitudes.

    Candidates are assessed against these assessment criteria. Currently employed candidates are observed carrying out their normal work duties by an assessor. They may also be asked to carry out simulated tasks and to answer written and/or oral questions. Candidates studying towards a Unit Standard, and who are not currently employed, will also be assessed using variety of assessment tools.

    Training providers offering the qualifications, or part thereof, shall be accredited in terms of the criteria laid down by the relevant SETA/ETQA.

    Qualified Assessors will be appointed by the training institutions offering the qualifications and must be registered and accredited with the relevant SETA/ETQA.

    Requirements of a portfolio

    Valid, reliable and authentic evidence (presented as a portfolio of evidence) from past achievements and experience which serves to supplement the assessment of applied competence.

    The portfolio may include inter alia:
  • Written statements from persons (e.g. current and/or previous employer, colleague, peer, manager, external customers) confirming competence of the learner
