PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit is a core unit standard in the qualification National Diploma in Retail/Wholesale Management. It is designed to assist people in investigating and assessing operations for running a retail / wholesale business. It will empower individual learners to identify characteristics of managing a business and to apply these in practice. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Numeracy and literacy on NQF level 4 or equivalent 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Business plan preparation factors including external business environment, sequence of logistical arrangements, staffing, lease negotiation and legal requirements?

    Logistical sequencing including shop fitters, stock buying, merchandise arrival, recruitment, service connection, sign writing, vehicle requirements and equipment requirements?

    Organisational objectives including sales budgets, expense budgets, daily, weekly and monthly targets, promotional activities and cash budgets?

    Environmental factors including legislation, macro economic policy, management competence, resource availability, infrastructure and community projects?

    Potential hazards including accidental damage, fire, flood, theft, life cycle, demand and level of capital required?

    Business data required for objectives preparation including size and type of market segment, product range, sources of supply, physical facilities, essential services, financial resources, return on investment, staffing needs, technology requirements, legal / regulatory compliance and growth / replicability potential

    Assessment Criteria:The ability to produce the following types of evidence:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the nature and international trends in the relevant industry of the W/R business?
    Demonstrate an understanding of the integration of all the business functions in a W/R business?
    Prepare various operational objectives that accurately reflect the mission and vision statements?

    Review and evaluate operational performance against objectives and scheduled activities and implement necessary changes? Present effectively daily, weekly and monthly plans for the operations of a W/R business
  • Demonstrate an understanding of core organizational systems, policies and procedures and the effect they have on the business?

    Monitor, review and evaluate current systems and policies and recommend changes as appropriate
  • Present a maintenance and housekeeping plan and control system that will ensure the optimum use of assets and a clean and safe environment in a retail / wholesale operation. ?

    Apply a planning and control system that will ensure correct implementation of the maintenance specifications for the assets and housekeeping practices in a retail / wholesale operation

    Describe correctly the role of internal and external support functions when closing a store
