UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
This standard is applicable to those in a control/management position within operations in a freight handling/storage environment in South Africa. The incumbent will have a working knowledge of international and national health and safety legislation pertaining to freight handling and be able to apply such knowledge effectively and productively in a level of control.
The incumbent will have a working knowledge of such safety laws and practices to a standard whereby freight operations in work areas will remain within such legislated standards (with due regard being given to productive handling, space utilisation and specific freight requirements (e.g. refrigerated vs. hazardous/dangerous goods). |

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS |
1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be registered with the FE/HE Registrar and the programs offered by this institution must be accredited with the relevant ETQA. 3. Moderation of assessment will be done by the relevant ETQA at its discretion. |
UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE |
The learner can understand, explain and apply:
1. International and national legislation pertaining to statutory health and safety laws (e.g. NOSA Certificate) and specific freight handling and storage requirements (e.g. Hazardous/dangerous and Dangerous Goods), including company policies and procedures. 2. First Aid skills backed by qualification certificate from a recognised body. 3. Fire fighting/prevention, qualification certificate from a recognised body, currently valid. 4. Hazardous/dangerous goods/freight handling (Hazchem Certificate), currently valid. 5. Precautions needed for AIDS prevention and the means to establish such awareness to be included within company policies if not in place. 6. International and national safety signs and symbols and the use of such in the work environment. 7. The procedures to follow in regard to the recording and follow-up of accidents/incidents. 8. The procedures to follow in regard to possible drug and alcohol abuse in the workplace. |
