PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons who have the responsibility to determine the velocity and volume flow rate of air by means of an anemometer.

Persons credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Describe the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) requirements for the use of an anemometer to determine the velocity and volume flow rate of air.
  • Prepare to determine air velocity.
  • Determine and record air velocity, calculate the volume flow rate of air and take appropriate action.
  • Perform post measurement activities.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) requirements pertaining to determining velocity and volume flow rate of air. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The limits for velocity and volume flow rates in the working place are explained, with reference to site-specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The explanation confirms understanding of the principle of operation, range and limitations of the anemometer in accordance with OEM requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The explanation confirms the understanding of the difference between velocity and volume flow rate of air. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The care, maintenance and calibration of the anemometer are explained and are in accordance with OEM requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare to measure air velocity and volume flow rate. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The required personal protective equipment is selected and its use explained in terms of the maintenance of health and safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The measuring equipment is examined pre-use and any defects found are dealt with in accordance with OEM requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Permission, where applicable, is obtained to enter the working place in terms of site-specific requirements and the reasons for obtaining permission are given. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The position where measurements are to be taken is selected, examined and hazards and risks pertaining to health and safety are dealt with prior to commencement of the measuring procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The preparation work is performed in a manner that fosters teamwork and avoids inappropriate conflict. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Determine and record air velocity, calculate the volume flow rate of air and take appropriate action. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The air velocity is determined and recorded in accordance with site-specific requirements and actions taken are explained as they pertain to the maintenance of workplace health and safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The cross sectional area is determined and recorded in accordance with best practice requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The volume flow rate of air is calculated and recorded according to specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The result is evaluated and appropriate action is taken, where applicable, in accordance with site-specific requirements in the interests of maintaining health and safety in the workplace. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The work is performed in a manner that fosters teamwork and avoids inappropriate conflict. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The occupational health and safety-related hazards are identified, monitored, addressed and reported in accordance with specified requirements.

    The instrument and accessories are cleaned and defective equipment is dealt with in accordance with OEM requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Reports are completed accurately and submitted to on time to the designated personnel. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant QCTO Quality Assurance Partner (QAP).
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant QAP.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant QAP according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed QAP procedures.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless the QAP policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standard/s.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant QAP.

This means that for the most part, the possession or lack of the knowledge can be directly inferred from the quality of the candidate's performance.     UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA 
    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment: appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, direct, authentic, sufficient, systematic, open and consistent.
