PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this unit standard are able to apply industry and worksite procedures for health, safety and security practices in a laundry environment.

Range: Laundry environment may include but is not limited to laundering; dry cleaning and any other commercial process to clean all types of clothing, textiles or fabrics.

Qualifying learners are able to:
  • Identify potential health, safety and security risks in a laundry environment.
  • Describe ways of reducing potential risks to health, safety and security in a laundry environment.
  • Explain ways of dealing with emergency incidents affecting health, safety and security in a laundry environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1 or the equivalent.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Unhealthy conditions in a laundry environment are identified and the possible effects of each on the health of people working there are given. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Unhealthy conditions may include but not limited to Litter and Debris; Rodents and Insects; Soiled textiles and Clothing contaminated with body fluids; Spillage of toxic chemicals; Dust and other soiling matter.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Unsafe conditions in a laundry environment are identified and the risks of each to the safety of people working there are given. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Unsafe conditions may include but not limited to Hot surfaces; Flammable materials; Steam; Gas or Compressed air leaks; Sharp tools and Items left in the soiled textiles; Hazardous chemicals; Spillages; Incorrect use of personal protective equipment; Exposed electrical wiring; Malfunction of equipment and Machinery; Safety guards not fitted and machinery overloaded; Abused or not being operated according to manufacturer's instructions.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Security risks in a laundry environment are identified and the possible consequences of each to the security of people and property are given. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Security risks may include but not limited to Unauthorised entry to high risk and sensitive areas; Unauthorised entry by any outsider; Vandalism of machinery; Sabotage of operating systems; Theft of customer property, Employers' assets or Employees' personal belongings.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Risks of persons gaining unauthorised entry into the laundry facility and potentially hazardous areas is explained in accordance with the worksite procedure relating to safety and security. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe ways of reducing potential risks to health, safety and security in a laundry environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The principles of reducing potential risks to health, safety and security in a laundry environment are listed in accordance with industry best practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The basic principles of reducing risks may include but not limited to safe handling and storage of materials and equipment; maintenance of good housekeeping; reporting potential health, safety and security risks; correct use personal protective equipment and correct handling and processing of contaminated linen and clothing.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Reasons for handling and storing chemicals in accordance with the Materials Safety Data sheets (MSDS) as provided by the chemicals supplier(s) are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Reasons for handling and storing equipment safely are explained in accordance with the manufacturers' recommendations and worksite procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Reasons for maintaining good housekeeping around work areas and machinery are explained in terms of Occupational Health and Safety legislation and worksite procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Reasons for reporting potential health, safety and security risks are explained in accordance with a legal framework. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Legal framework may include but is not limited to Occupational Health and Safety legislation, Healthcare legislation and the worksite procedure.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Appropriate personal protective equipment in a laundry environment is described in terms of Occupational Health and Safety legislation, healthcare legislation and the worksite procedure. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Personal protective equipment may include but not limited to Overall; Apron; Appropriate footwear e.g. steel toe caps, gum boots etc, Heat proof gloves, Rubber gloves, Cotton gloves, Mask, Protective eye wear.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Reasons for handling and processing contaminated linen and clothing correctly is explained in accordance with worksite procedures 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain ways of dealing with emergency incidents affecting health, safety and security in a laundry environment. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Incidents may include but not limited to Fire; Explosion; Electrical short circuits; Steam leaks; Gas leaks; Chemical spillage; Burst water pipes; Flooding; Personal injury and criminal activity e.g. armed robbery etc.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Emergency incidents in a laundry environment are listed in terms of their root causes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Procedures to deal with emergency incidents are explained in terms of the worksite procedure and Occupational Health and Safety legislation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Procedures may include but not limited to Raising alarms; Initiating fire fighting; Using emergency equipment; Evacuating the premises; Assembly points and Attendance registers etc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Documentation, equipment and infrastructure required to deal with incidents affecting health, safety and security in a workplace are listed and the locations are described. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Documentation, equipment and infrastructure may includes but not limited to Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS); Worksite procedures relating to fire, Evacuation, Accidents etc.; Telephone numbers of emergency services, Alarm bell/button, Fire extinguishers, Fire hoses; Spillage blankets; Granular sand; Designated first aider(s); First aid boxes; Emergency exits and Assembly points etc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Action to be taken in an emergency incident is explained to demonstrate understanding. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA`s policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
