PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons who work on hot-head or live steam presses for the finishing of items after the cleaning process within an industrial or commercial laundry.

Qualifying learners are able to:
  • Prepare to press articles.
  • Press flatwork using hot-head and live steam presses.
  • Perform end of pressing flatwork procedures. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1or the equivalent.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare to press garments. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The care labels and symbols on laundered items are interpreted, stating the impact on the articles from the pressing process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The types of fibres and fabrics are described in terms of their reaction to heat and pressure and how they must be dealt with during the pressing process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Damage to pressed articles is explained in terms of incorrect type of press or inappropriate pressing procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Pressing machines are adjusted and checked to ensure they are clean and safe and ready for use. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Press flatwork using hot-head and live steam presses.

    Items are checked to ascertain condition before pressing.

    Appropriate action is taken for items not meeting pressing standards.

    Damp items are finished on hot head presses as required.

    Items are live steam pressed after being tumbled dried.

    Machines are operated according to manufactures instructions and worksite procedures.

    Malfunctioning pressers are stopped in accordance with worksite procedures and manufacturer's instructions.

    Perform end of pressing flatwork procedures.

    Pressed items are inspected to check compliance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Unsatisfactory pressed items are removed and redirected in accordance with worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Pressed items are passed on for packing and dispatch according to worksite procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Faulty equipment is reported according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Problems with the operation of the press and or ancillary folding equipment are reported according to work-site procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Routine maintenance of pressing machines are implemented according to the manufacturer's instructions, preventative maintenance and worksite procedures.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA`s policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
