PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to prepare a treatment locality and their workstation so that eyebrow tinting and shaping and eye lash tinting can be performed in a professional manner. They will also be able to prepare the client for the treatment.

The qualifying learner is able to:
  • Prepare the treatment room for eyelash and eyebrow tinting services.
  • Prepare the client for eyelashes and eyebrow tinting.
  • Manage and performing the colouring of eyelashes and eyebrows by means of tinting.
  • Perform post tinting services.
  • Consult, plan and prepare client for treatment.
  • Shape eyebrows.
  • Tint eyebrows and lashes.
  • Apply artificial lashes.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Safe and hygienic work practises means that the required levels of hygiene are maintained at all times and that the equipment, tools, materials, treatment areas and the working environment are cleaned and sanitised in the appropriate manner.

    Required level of hygiene for this unit standard includes:
  • Disposable tools and materials are required with the exception of tools and materials that can be sterilised.

    Work environment includes:
  • Immediate work environment is clean and dust free.
  • Environment is odour fresh.
  • All spills are dealt with immediately.
  • All products and containers are clean.

    Waste disposal includes:
  • All needles and lancets are put in a sharp's container.
  • The contents of sharp's containers are incinerated according to health specifications.
  • Materials (inter alia -gloves, cotton wool, gauze, tissues, orange sticks, disposable garments, spatulas) soiled with bodily fluids are placed in a bin/receptacle with plastic liner sprinkled with the appropriate sterling, the bag is sealed and disposed of.
  • Professional manner is continuously assessed according to aspects such as ethical standards, personal and interpersonal skills, body language, verbal and non-verbal communication, posture and personal appearance.

    Lash and brow treatments may include:
  • Eyebrow shaping including waxing or tweezing.
  • Eyelash or eyebrow colouring.
  • Application of false eyelashes.
  • Lash perming.

    Chemical treatments may include:
  • Eyelash or eyebrow colouring or perming.

    Consult, plan and prepare client for treatment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The work area is set up and maintained to meet legal, hygiene and treatment requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Consultation techniques are used to determine the client's treatment plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A written and signed consent is obtained prior to carrying out the treatment from the client or parent/guardian if the client is a minor. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Possible contra-actions resulting from lash and brow treatments are explained to determine ways on how to deal with them. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Actions to be taken in an event when tint adhesives or solvent enters the client's eye are described in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    A client is consulted to identify any contra-indications to the treatments for recording purposes in order to take any necessary action.

    Clients are encouraged to ask questions in order to clarify any points.

    The client's understanding of the treatment prior to commencement is checked in order to discuss any areas that require clarification.

    Time intervals between eyebrow shaping treatments are explained as per the recommendations of the manufacturer.

    The eyebrow area is cleansed and prepared prior to the treatment.

    The skin is kept firm to minimise discomfort to the client using application techniques.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The client's understanding of the treatment is checked prior to commencement in order to discuss any areas that require clarification. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Treatments of eyebrows include: plucking, reshape/tidy, grooming, tinting and cosmetics. Eyelashes include tinting, cosmetics, individual extensions and strip lashes.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The area is cleansed and prepared prior to the treatment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ways for safe application of eyebrow and lash tinting are described to keep the skin surrounding the area protected. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Ways include but are not limited to using an applicator and application with white petroleum jelly, small cardboard protectors and rinsing.

    Tints are mixed to meet manufacturer's instructions and client' requirements and expectations.

    The tint is removed promptly in the event of any contra-actions and a cold water compress is applied to soothe the eye.
