PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for the crew leader working in a supervisory role on a fire prevention assignment. Crew leaders working on site have to work within the legal and regulatory framework to plan and conduct controlled burning operations in a safe manner.

People coordinated with this unit standard are able to:
  • Plan a controlled burn for a range purposes.
  • Coordinate team activities in controlled burn operations for a range of purposes.
  • Conduct post burning activities according to plan.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Plan a controlled burn for a range purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Reasons for controlled burn are identified and communicated to crew members. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A plan for a controlled burn is secured from relevant parties. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Operational strategy and tactics are developed from the controlled burn plan. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Operational strategy includes but is not limited to objectives, planning, notification of relevant parties, obtaining weather forecasts, contingency plan, inspecting the site, updating the plan, resource and equipment need.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Communication with stakeholders is undertaken, including community fire awareness campaigns. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Checks are carried out that the relevant and necessary documentation on the burn are processed in compliance with legal requirements.

    Co-ordinate team activities in controlled burn operations for a range of purposes.

    Personnel and resources on site are organised for executing the burn.

    Appropriate Personnel Protective Clothing (PPC) is worn by crew members.

    Team members are briefed on desired outcomes.

    Communication includes but is not limited to roles, site allocation and contingency plan.

    Controlled burn activities are conducted for a range of purposes according to the plan.

    Controlled burn activities include but are not limited to during-the-burn-communication on site and weather tracking.

    Burning operations are controlled to ensure a safe and efficient operation.

    The burning area is controlled at all times.

    Conduct post burning activities according to plan.

    Burn objectives are ensured to have been met in line with the plan.

    Complete extinguishment (mopping up) of the burnt area is ensured.

    Relevant parties are given notice on completion of burn.

  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
