PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
This unit standard is for people who work, or intend to work in a yacht and boat building environment where an understanding of boat design is required.
The learner will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental principles of yacht and boat design, displacement, stability, and the interior layout of a boat. People credited with this unit standard are able to: |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
It is assumed that learners are competent in:
> Apply a range of boat design and construction techniques at NQF Level 3. |
UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
All work is performed under supervision. |
Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Calculate displacement and explain its importance in boat building. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Methods for calculating displacement at a design stage are understood. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The importance of accurately calculating displacement is explained. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Dispersement calculations are performed for a number of craft using appropriate methods. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Demonstrate an understanding of stability and methods of calculation in boat design. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The importance of stability in small craft design is explained in terms of the safety of crew, passengers, on-board items and the seaworthiness of the craft. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Methods of estimating/calculating stability are identified and described. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Calculations of stability are made according to scientific principle. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 |
Demonstrate an understanding of rig design. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Different aspects and features of small craft rig design are described and their implications for sailing performance discussed. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The ways in which variations to small craft rig design may be made are explained focussing on the way in which the variations may positively or negatively affect craft performance. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 |
Identify and describe the main features of interior boat and yacht layout. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Practical considerations which need to be taken into account for general arrangements and interior layouts for small craft are identified and described. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
A general arrangement drawing is completed with full explanation of all the decisions taken regarding the placement of objects/equipment and interior layout according to principles of interior design. |

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD: |
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here. |
