PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners assessed against this unit standard will possess the skills and techniques required to perform minor demolition tasks.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Adhere and abide by the relevant safety regulations when working with explosives and accessories.
  • Demonstrate and understand the theory of explosives.
  • Develop a plan for a minor demolition task.
  • Execute a planned minor demolition task.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of mines.

    Identify explosives and accessories. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The organisational specific explosives and accessories terminology is understood and applied according to its functions and uses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The concept of explosives and accessories as described in organisational specific work place procedures is explained in terms of its uses and operating principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The properties and behaviour of the different explosives and accessories used by the organisation are explained in order to determine its impact on operations and specific purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The ability to recognise and complete the relevant explosive and accessory administration as described in work place procedures is demonstrated in relation to situational awareness. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The ability to identify, evaluate and discuss the uses of the various organisational specific explosives and accessories is demonstrated in order to determine efficiency. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The difference between military and commercial explosives and accessories is identified and explained taking into account objectives, resources and constraints. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The difference between high and low explosives is identified and explained according to its functions and uses in order to determine its impact on operations and specific purpose.

    Apply safety regulations when performing demolition tasks.

    Action plans are developed to create safety awareness in accordance with safety regulations that are prescribed in work place procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Demolition tasks are assessed to maximise performance and minimise risk in accordance with the organisational regulations and legal framework. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The process to be followed during an explosive incident in a given set of circumstances is demonstrated in accordance with work place procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The hazards posed by radio frequencies during the execution of a demolition task are explained.

    Apply the theory of explosives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The type of explosives and accessories required to achieve a set goal is determined taking into account objectives, resources and constraints to optimise operational performance. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Set goal includes but is not limited to cut, blast, push, extract and demolish.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The type of initiation method required to initiate the explosion (e.g. mechanical or electrical) for a given task is determined according to its functions and uses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The anatomy of a charge is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The ability to apply a shock tube to accomplish a given task is demonstrated in order to optimise operational performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The ability to assess a given task and calculate the amount of explosives required to achieve a set goal is demonstrated in order to achieve operational objectives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The reasons for premature explosions, accidents and defects are explained in order to adjust plans where necessary taking into account objectives, resources and constraints.

    Perform a minor demolition task. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The ability to communicate in writing the administrative arrangements prior to the commencement of a demolition task is demonstrated to ensure all role players are informed of support required in relational to risk analysis and situational awareness. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The applicable safety regulations to be applied before, during and after the execution of a demolitions task is communicated in writing relating to safety during demolition tasks. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The ability to conduct the range of minor demolition tasks using the range of connecting and initiation methods is demonstrated in accordance with the plan. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Types of demolition tasks: Cutting wood, steel and concrete; Demolish wood, steel and concrete; Cratering charge; Rapid entry charges.
  • Connecting methods: Knots, Fasteners and Tape.
  • Initiating methods: Mechanical and Electrical.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The relevant legislation applicable to mine warfare is applied to determine the best course of actions for a given set of circumstances. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The ability to identify, name and discuss the characteristics and composition of the range of mines used in the organisation is demonstrated that will create the required awareness. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Terminology used during mine awareness is defined and discussed according to its impact on operations and specific purpose. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The ability to identify the indicators of mines and mine fields in the operating environment is demonstrated to determine potential risks. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The safety principles in mine/UXO-affected areas are applied in accordance to the plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The ability to apply emergency procedures during a mine incident is demonstrated in a systematic manner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The ability to assist a mine/UXO victim is demonstrated in a systematic manner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    The ability to operate a command-detonated mine is demonstrated according to its operating principles. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through Recognition of Prior Learning) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

    Identify and solve problems in which responses display that responsible decisions using critical and creative thinking has been made by means of determining the explosives and accessories required to safely perform a minor demolitions task while ensuring the safety of personnel in and around the immediate area.

    Working effectively with others as a member of a team, group, organisation or community where the individual conducting the demolition task informs the local authorities, emergency services and participating team members with regards to the execution of the demolition task.

    Organise and manage oneself and one's activities responsibly and effectively by laying of demolition charges that has to be planned, organised and executed effectively.

    Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information when learners are capable of collecting and analysing information relating to a demolition target in order to evaluate the explosive quantities required to achieve the desired effect.
