Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Construct a concrete base for a storage tank. |
OUTCOME RANGE |
Includes but is not limited to reasons for a concrete base, consequences of installing directly on the ground, compacting soil, install blinding, mixing, pouring and floating the concrete. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The reasons why storage tanks require a level concrete base are explained in terms of the need to achieve a stable platform and even weight distribution. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The consequences of installing a tank directly onto the ground are described with respect to the possible repercussions that may result. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The necessity of compacting the sub-base is explained in terms of achieving the degree of compaction to ensure that no subsidence occurs. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
The various methods of "blinding" the compacted area before the concrete is laid are described and the techniques of using plastic underlay as a blinding are demonstrated in accordance with the company's standard operating procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
The consequences of pouring concrete onto bare earth are explained in terms of the resultant "honeycombing" effect and reduction in load bearing strength. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 |
The procedures for mixing, pouring and floating the concrete are demonstrated in accordance with the company's standard operating procedures. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Position a storage tank on a prepared base and install the necessary piping. |
OUTCOME RANGE |
Includes but is not limited to types of tanks: Galvanised steel-panel and individual , fibre cement, fibreglass, polyethylene, handling practices for moving and installing a tank, inspection cover, LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene) and soft walled piping, inlet at top, inlet opposite outlet, break joints, and installation procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The various types of storage tanks are described in terms of their suitability for the storage of irrigation water and the correct handling practices for moving and placing a tank on a prepared base are demonstrated in accordance with the company's standard operating procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The importance of ensuring that the tank's inspection cover faces an accessible side is explained in terms of the need to gain easy access to the equipment in the tank. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The reasons why LDPE and other soft walled pipes should not be fitted to the inlet or outlet connections of a tank are explained within the context of their lack of durability for external use. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
The necessity of connecting the inlet piping to the top of the tank and on the opposite side to the outlet are explained with regard to preventing possible backflow out of the tank and the reduction outlet turbulence. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
The essential need to fit "break joints" on the inlet and outlet piping is explained and the procedures for installing the piping and interconnecting fittings are demonstrated in accordance with the company's standard operating procedures. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 |
Fit and adjust isolation and control valves to a storage tank. |
OUTCOME RANGE |
Includes but is not limited to isolation valves, ease of maintenance, conserving water, ball valve, tank level indicators, causes of vortex formation, diffuser plate. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The necessity of installing an isolation valve on the outlet piping from the tank is explained with regard to facilitating ease of maintenance and of conserving the stored water. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The role that a ball valve plays in maintaining the water level in a tank is explained and the procedures for fitting and adjusting this valve are demonstrated in accordance with the company's standard operating procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The function that a solenoid valve performs in controlling tank filling is described and the procedures for fitting and adjusting the valve are demonstrated in accordance with the company's standard operating procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
The various types of tank level indicators are described and the procedures for fitting and adjusting these are demonstrated in accordance with the company's standard operating procedures. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
The necessity of preventing a suction vortex in a storage tank is described in terms of the factors that cause the formation of this phenomenon and the dangers that this poses to a pump. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 |
The methods of preventing or curing a vortex in a storage tank are demonstrated in accordance with the company's standard operating procedures. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 |
Fit and adjust float switches to a storage tank. |
OUTCOME RANGE |
Includes but is not limited to low level functions, pump protection, high level control functions, tank filling and pump hunting, low voltage operation, settings and positioning, |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The necessity of installing a float switch for low level "cut out" is explained with respect to preventing the "dry running" of a pump fitted to the outlet piping. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The functions that the differential settings for a float switch perform when utilised for low level protection are described in terms of the adjustment between switching off a booster pump and the recovery level when it is reactivated. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The role that a float switch plays in controlling the filling of a tank is described within the context of the "high level" activation of a borehole or solenoid valve. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
The functions that the differential settings for a float switch perform when utilised for high level control are described in terms of controlling the filling and preventing the feeder/borehole pump from "hunting". |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
The reasons why float switches must only operate at 24-volts or lower are explained in context of adhering to safety practices and the prevention of possible electrocution. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 |
The reasons why float switches must be installed away from the side of a tank and kept apart from each other are explained in terms of preventing entanglement and "sticking" to the side of the tank. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 |
The procedures for installing, positioning and adjusting float switches for high level control and low level protection are demonstrated in accordance with the company's standard operating procedures. |
