The learner achieving this Unit Standard will be able to conduct a guided birding experience.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Conduct a tour to locate, identify and interpret birds.
  • Discuss avian behaviour.
  • Describe seasonal changes in distribution and behaviour of important species.
  • Use a bird field guide.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Conduct a tour to locate, identify and interpret birds. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Bird species in the field are located and identified within the area of operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Interesting features of birds in the region including are described in terms of their characteristics flight patterns, calls and sounds. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Characteristics include flight patterns, calls, sounds, breeding patterns, habitat, cultural myths and uses of birds and their ethnic names.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The distribution patterns of birds are discussed with special reference to local endemics, near endemics and specials. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An identification is made of any important or interesting bird sites in the area. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Breeding colonies; drinking places; roosting sites and seasonal wetlands.

    A discussion and interpretation is given in the field, of avian behaviour. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Interpretation of obvious behaviour:
  • Signs and sounds made by these birds; flight patterns; life cycles and development; nesting; parenting; territories and home ranges; migration and seasonal movements and social behaviour.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A selection is made of aspects of avian behaviour that are likely to appeal to a particular audience. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ecological interactions between birds and their environment are interpreted in the field.

    Describe seasonal changes in distribution and behaviour of important species.

    General seasonal changes in bird populations are described as applicable to a specific area.

    A brief discussion is provided of general and local seasonal movements of "flagship" species. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Seasonal patterns of behaviour of "flagship" species are described in terms of breeding, migration and appearance.

    Use a bird field guide.

    Species are located in a field guide.

    The field guide is used in the wild environment to assist with the identification of unusual or difficult species or species in obscure plumage conditions.

    The field guide is used to communicate descriptive information to participants.
