This unit standard builds on the knowledge of equine conformation. The qualifying learner will understand the various unsoundness conditions associated with equines.

Qualifying learners will be capable of:
  • Defining unsoundnesses.
  • Recognising unsoundnesses related to conformation.
  • Categorising the nature of unsoundnesses.

    Define unsoundnesses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The difference between unsoundness, lameness and a blemish is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Olbservable signs of unsoundness are recognised and discussed with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of not recognising unsoundness are discussed in a given case study. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Recognise unsoundnesses related to conformation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Joint and skeletal unsoundnesses and lamenesses related to conformation traits are described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tendon and ligament unsoundnesses and lamenesses related to conformation traits are described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The significance of the condition is discussed relative to the selection of horses for specific purposes.

    Unsoundnesses of cardio-vascular system are explained in relation to performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Neurological system is described in relation to the functioning of an equine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Muscular and skeletal system is described in relation to functioning of an equine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Demonstrate an awareness of when to consult a health care professional. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance (ETQA) body.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the Units Standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the Unit Standard.
