PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner credited with this Unit Standard will be able to wean a young foal and supervise its education and feeding until it becomes a yearling.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Weaning a foal from the mare.
  • Conditioning a weanling.
  • Managing the health and development of a foal.
  • Implementing a feeding programme.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Wean a foal from the mare. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Pedigree documentation is completed in accordance with breed association rules and regulations and stud farm procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Recorded information includes, but is not limited to:
  • Brand, DNA, micro chipping, blood typing, physical description, markings and photographs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Foal is weaned in accordance with stud farm procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Weaning methods include, but is not limited to:
  • Abrupt, one foal only, group weaning into stables, paddock weaning by removing mares and natural weaning.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Specific requirements of a foal are determined for a given situation and the weaning method employed is appropriate to the context.

    Condition a weanling.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Commands are issued to the weanling in accordance with standard stud farm practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Commands include, but are not limited to:
  • Lead at walk, turn, halt and tie up.

    The weanling is systematically exposed to daily activities in accordance with standard stud farm practices.

    Daily activities include, but are not limited to:
  • Hosing, rugging, cleaning of hooves, trimming of hooves, boxing and grooming.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The weanling is groomed to accustom foal to all over body handling in accordance with standard stud farm practices. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Manage the health and development of a foal. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Action faults are recognised and a hoof trimming programme is implemented in conjunction with a farrier in accordance with stud farm procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A de-worming programme is implemented and maintained in conjunction with a veterinarian in accordance with stud farm procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Paddock maintenance is conducted in terms of controlling the spread of parasites in accordance with stud farm procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Maintenance activities include, but are not limited to:
  • Harrowing, picking up manure, resting paddock, rotational grazing, supplementary feeds, cleaning troughs and cleaning feed bins.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Teeth of the foal are inspected and their condition is reported in accordance with stud farm corrective procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Signs of tail chewing are recognised and corrective actions are implemented in accordance with stud farm procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    General ill health is recognised and corrective action is taken in accordance with stud farm procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Implement a feeding programme. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A balanced ration is provided to meet nutritional requirements in accordance with the age of the foal and availability of food type to achieve maximum growth potential without compromising the health or development of the horse. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The consequences of incorrect nutrition for the developing foal are explained in terms of the impact on health and stature. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Practical feeding considerations are taken into account when paddock feeding in accordance with stud farm procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Considerations include, but are not limited to:
  • Pecking order, extra container to number of horses, season, pasture availability and individual long term goals.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the unit standard.

  • Powers of Seizure Regulation 468 as contained in the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962.
