PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this Unit Standard will have an understanding of the cardio-vascular, urogenital, respiratory and basic lymphatic, endocrine and nervous system of equines.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the cardio-vascular system of the equine.
  • Explaining the urogenital system of the equine.
  • Explaining the respiratory system of the equine.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the basic lymphatic system of the equine.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the basic endocrine system of the equine.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the basic nervous system of the equine.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the common ailments of the functional systems.

    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.

    Parts of the urinary system are identified on a diagram.

    The functions of each part of the urogenetal system are explained. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain the respiratory system of the equine.

    Parts of the respiratory system are identified and labelled on a diagram. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Function of the respiratory system is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Roles of the respiratory system is explained in relation to performance. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Demonstrating an understanding of the common ailments of the functional systems. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Common ailments includes but are not limited to filled legs, RAO, Cushings syndrome, radial nerve paralysis, ataxia, string halt and epistaxis.

    Common ailments and their symptoms for the equine and named and described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Remedies for common ailments are named. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Where necessary referral action that may be required is named.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
