PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The persons credited with this Unit Standard will be able to demonstrate an understanding of and prepare a novice horse for lungeing. They will also be able to use terminology such as lunge rein, whip, and verbal commands during the lungeing process. They will be able to lunge a novice horse for training and/or exercise and take off and store the lungeing tack after its use. The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing a novice horse for lungeing.
  • Conducting lungeing of a novice horse for training and exercise.
  • Assessing the horse's way of going.
  • Removing and storing lungeing tack after use.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare a novice horse for lungeing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The function of lungeing a novice horse is described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Advanced lungeing tack is named by pointing out each item and explaining its use. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Advanced lunging tack includes but is not limited to chambon; side reins; lungeing roller.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Advanced lungeing tack is fitted to a novice horse according to international standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Conduct lungeing of a novice horse for training and exercise. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Protective clothing is selected and worn by a handler in accordance with health and safety requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Protective clothing includes but not limited to protective closed shoes, gloves, hardhat.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A lungeing check is carried out before lungeing takes place. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Lungeing check includes but is not limited to tack, equipment, footing, area, weather conditions, horse behaviour and situations which may interfere with lungeing.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Advanced lungeing tack if fitted to the equine in accordance with health and safety requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Advanced lunging tack includes but is not limited to chambon; side reins; lungeing roller.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The methods and techniques of lungeing a novice horse in walk, trot and canter are demonstrated with examples of each. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The methods and techniques of lungeing includes but not limited to the use of voice aids, and lungeing equipment according to internationally accepted techniques.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Assess the horse's way of going. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The horse's working frame at walk, trot and canter are assessed with explanations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The horse's working paces at walk, trot and canter are assessed with explanations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The horses walking paces includes both desirable and undesirable paces as well as blance, evenness, cadence, tempo.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of the horse not working in a correct frame or with even paces are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An exercise programme for the horse being assessed is described. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    An exercise programme includes timeframes and application of training aids/tack.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Remove and store lungeing tack after use.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A novice horse is secured in accordance with international standards before lungeing tack is removed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Lungeing tack is removed from the novice horse according to international standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Lungeing tack is cleaned using correct materials according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Lungeing tack is stored in accordance with organisational requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual wishing to be assessed, (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of NQF Level 1 qualification in the equine field.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and ETQA guidelines.

    Essential Embedded Knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated Assessment Criteria.
