PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the elements of equine feeding and nutrition and understanding features and functions of each part of the digestive tract; formulate a feeding regime for individual equine requirements; and feed the equine as well as identify feeding problems.

    Learner accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Demonstrating knowledge of equine feed types.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of the equine digestive system and feed related diseases.
  • Developing diet for a specific equine.
  • Displaying basic knowledge of poisonous substances and identifying feeding problems.

    The passage of food through the digestive tract is explained with examples.

    Features of the digestive tract are described in relation to the practical feeding of an equine.

    The cause of feed related colic is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Cause of laminitis and allergic reactions related to feeding is explained in a given case study. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Develop a diet for a specific equine.

    Ability to analyse the equine's dietary needs is demonstrated in a given case study. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Dietary needs include but are not limited to age, temperament and work load, condition and breed type.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A feeding regime for individual equine requirements is formulated and diet sheet designed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ability to recognize signs of deficiency of essential nutrients is determined and corrective action taken. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Displaying basic knowledge of poisonous substances and identify feeding problems.

    Substances toxic to equines are recognized and named. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Substances include herbicides, pesticides, cleaning agents and topical medications.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Health problems associated with feeding are identified and a course of action taken which is best suited for the particular equine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Management techniques of diet in the case of a sick equine are explained with examples. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual wishing to be assessed, (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of level 4 qualification in the equine field.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this US Unit Standard, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and ETQA guidelines.

    Essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria.
