PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this unit standard will have an understanding of Equine Dentition. They will be able to explain the effects of teeth on the overall well being of an equine. The learners will also be able to determine an equine's age by examining their teeth within internationally accepted standards.

Learner accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the teeth of an equine.
  • Explaining the effects of ageing on the teeth.
  • Ageing an equine.
  • Describing routine care and procedures relating to equine dentistry.

    The function of each type of tooth is explained with examples.

    Aspects of dental physiology are understood and listed. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Discuss the effects of ageing and related complications on the Equine's teeth. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The effects of ageing and environmental factors on the teeth of an equine are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effect of the grinding action on the molar and pre molar teeth is explained in order to inform decision makers on required dental care.

    Complications relating to equine teeth are identified. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Teeth complication includes but not limited to wolf teeth and caps.

    Consequences of not recognising equine tooth complications are explained with examples

    Age an Equine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Phases of tooth eruption are described and identified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The equine's mouth and teeth are examined following humane and safe equine handling procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The equine's age is estimated according to the characteristics signs of wear and growth on the teeth.

    Discuss dental routine and maintenance care.

    Equine dental routine is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The problems associated with teeth are explained with regard to dental irregularities. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Irregularities include but are not limited to overshot jaw, undershot jaw, hooks, caps, and wolf teeth.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of not performing routine dental care are explained with examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The consequences include but are not limited to abscess, weight loss, ulcers, behavioural problems and quidding.
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual wishing to be assessed, (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of level 4 qualification in the Equine field.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this US or assessing this US must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and ETQA guidelines.
