Learners credited with this unit standard are able to recognize, fit and understand items of ancillary tack used on equines.

Learner accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Recognising and fitting the types of martingales used on Equines.
  • Recognising and fitting the types of ancillary tack used to keep a saddle in place on an Equine.
  • Recognising and understanding the use of types of training aids used for extra control of an Equine.
  • Recognising the types of numnahs and pads used under a saddle for the comfort of an Equine.
  • Recognising and fitting the types of ancillary tack used for the well being of Equines.

    Demonstrate knowledge of martingales. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The types of martingales used on Equines for extra control are recognised. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Running, standing, bib,and irish.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The types of martingales are fitted to the equines according to internationally accepted standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An understanding of the control affected by martingales is discussed in a given case study. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate knowledge of ancillary tack used to keep a saddle in place on an Equine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The items of anciallary tack used to keep a saddle in place on an equine are recognised. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Breastplate, breast girth,and crupper.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The ancillary items of tack are fitted to the saddle on an equine according to internationally accepted standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of not fitting the ancillary items of tack to the saddle and equine are explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Demonstrate knowledge of Equine training aids. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The items of ancillary tack used as training aids for Equines are recognised from given samples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Including but not limited to de gouge, market harborough, running reins, neck stretcher, grass rein, check rein,and balancing rein.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The items of ancillary tack used as training aids for Equines are fitted according to internationally accepted standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of not fitting items of ancillary tack for extra control when training an equine are explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Demonstrate knowledge of equine numnahs and pads. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Recognising numnahs and pads used under a saddle for the well being of equines. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Including but not limited to gel pads, wither pads, back pads, riser pads, bi-numnahs, air filled numnahs, sheepskin numnahs, synthetic numnahs, Bead filled numnahs.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Fitting numnahs and pads under a saddle for the well being of the equine to internationally accepted standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Describes the care and storage of numnahs and pads in a given case study. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of not fitting, caring or storing for numnahs or pads are explained with examples. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Knowledge of tack for equine well being. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Recognises items of tack for the well being of equines. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes but not limited to nose nets, ear covers, fly fringes,and fly masks.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Fitting items of tack for the comfort and well being of equines according to manufacturers recommendations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Hygienic care and storage for the items of tack for equine comfort and well being are described with given case studies. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual wishing to be assessed, (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of level 4 qualification in the equine field.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard, or assessing this Unit Standard, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and ETQA guidelines.

    Essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria. Candidates are unlikely to achieve all specific outcomes, to the standards described in the assessment criteria, without knowledge of the listed embedded knowledge. Where direct assessment of knowledge is required, assessment criteria have been included in the body of the unit standard.
