PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is for people who are in a role of taking care of equines on a daily basis.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Organise daily equine care routines to ensure that all tasks are carried out in an orderly sequence.

    This Unit Standard will contribute to the development of a learner within the Equine field by providing recognition, further mobility within this field of study. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this Unit Standard are essential for creating opportunities within the equine industry.

    Learner accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Understanding record keeping for an equine establishment.
  • Planning and monitoring routines and programmes for an equine establishment.
  • Designing equine facilities. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Restrain a horse at NQF Level 1.

    A daily schedule according to in-house procedures is described.

    Daily schedule includes but is not limited to standard procedures for livery yards, horses kept at grass, racing yards, riding school, stud farms and policing facility.

    A seasonal schedule according to in-house procedures is described.

    Seasonal schedule includes but is not limited to pest control, pasture management, inoculation, parasite control, seasonal purchases and maintenance.

    Mechanical equipment used in stable yards is explained.

    Mechanical equipment includes but are not limited to tractors, trailers, grass cutters and chaff cutter.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual wishing to be assessed, (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of NQF Level 4 Qualification in the equine field.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant Qualification and ETQA guidelines. 

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    Essential Embedded Knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated Assessment Criteria. Candidates are unlikely to achieve all specific outcomes, to the standards described in the assessment criteria, without knowledge of the listed Embedded Knowledge. Where direct assessment of knowledge is required, Assessment Criteria have been included in the body of the Unit Standard.
