PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to explain the theory relating to the manoeuvre of the vessel both in the port and at sea. They will also be able to manoeuvre the vessel at sea under different situations and conditions at sea and in a port.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the theory relating to manoeuvring the vessel.
  • Manoeuvring the vessel in port.
  • Manoeuvring the vessel at sea under different situations and conditions. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
  • This unit standard involves the basic competence to manoeuvre a sea going vessel at sea and in port under different situations and conditions.
  • Work must be carried out in accordance with the relevant maritime regulations.
  • Can demonstrate competence by oral examination, completion of approved education and training, written theoretical examination and assessment of evidence obtained from one or more of the following:
    > Approved in-service training.
    > Approved training ship.
    > Approved simulator training.
    > Approved laboratory equipment training.
    > The safe operating limits of ship propulsion, steering and power systems which must not be exceeded in normal manoeuvres.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain the theory relating to manoeuvring the vessel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The effects of a single and twin propeller(s) are explained as how they impact on the turning circle of a ship. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effects of dead weight, draught, trim, speed and under-keel clearance on turning circles and stopping distances are described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The effects of wind and current on ship handling are described with examples of its impact on the vessel. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Squat, shallow-water, interaction between ships, canal effect and similar effects are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The safe operating limits of ship propulsion, steering and power systems are described which must not be exceeded in normal manoeuvres. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The adjustments made to the ship's course and speed are described in order to maintain safety of navigation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Manoeuvre the vessel in port. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Manoeuvring will include but not limited to berthing or unberthing against the quay, double berthing, moving from one quay space to another.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Basic manoeuvres, duties and use of mooring ropes during unberthing are explained and demonstrated in accordance with vessel procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Basic manoeuvres, duties and use of mooring ropes during berthing are explained and demonstrated in accordance with vessel procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Mooring ropes are used when along side. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Manoeuvre the vessel at sea under different situations and conditions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Manoeuvres and procedures for the rescue of persons in distress and man overboard are described with examples of their purpose. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Proper procedures for anchoring and mooring are described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Manoeuvring during fishing operations is explained with special regard to factors that could adversely affect the vessel's safety during such operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Towing and being towed procedures are described with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Berthing, unberthing, anchoring and manoeuvring alongside other vessels at sea is described with examples of the procedures.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
