PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to explain the theory relating to the manoeuvre of the vessel both in the port and at sea. They will also be able to manoeuvre the vessel at sea under different situations and conditions at sea and in a port.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The effects of a single and twin propeller(s) are explained as how they impact on the turning circle of a ship. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The effects of dead weight, draught, trim, speed and under-keel clearance on turning circles and stopping distances are described with examples. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The effects of wind and current on ship handling are described with examples of its impact on the vessel. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Squat, shallow-water, interaction between ships, canal effect and similar effects are explained with examples. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
The safe operating limits of ship propulsion, steering and power systems are described which must not be exceeded in normal manoeuvres. |

The adjustments made to the ship's course and speed are described in order to maintain safety of navigation. |
