PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The scope of this Unit Standard covers the whole environment, which can be described as the dry mill of a Lumber Mill. All personnel involved in the activities of this work area, i.e. sorting, stacking and strapping are expected to show competency in this area. This Unit Standard will also assist them to enlarge their scope of knowledge by exposing them to the quality of material handled and processed in the relevant work areas of sorting, stacking and strapping. In this instance, they will be better positioned to determine the raw, processed, reject and waste types of materials.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Explain correctly the purpose sorting, stacking and strapping and know the sequence of activities, basic workings of the equipment used, understand the concept of lumber grades and dimensions and know the factors determining this.
  • Sorting, stacking and strapping of graded lumber.
  • Perform these to the standards prescribed for this level.

    A learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate competence in Mathematical and Communication Literacy equivalent to ABET Level 3 or an equivalent.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify graders' marks on graded lumber. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Marks and colour codes for the relevant appearance as well as stress/strength grades of lumber, grading stations and their products. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The correct identification of the graders' marks on the graded lumber ensures that this lumber can be correctly classified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The learner performs the task of identifying graders' marks as prescribed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The graded lumber is classified into the correct grade classes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The identification process is performed within the prescribed time limits. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Collect graded lumber and stack in parcels containing similar grades and uniform dimensions. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Graders' marks and colour codes, lumber dimensions-width and length classes, stack/parcel sizes, collection points and stacking stations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The correct collection and stacking in parcels of graded lumber ensures that these parcels contain the appropriate grade of lumber of uniform dimensions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The process is performed in the prescribed manner. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The stacks contain graded lumber of the appropriate grades and dimensions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Apply the appropriate grade and other relevant marks in the prescribed positions on the graded lumber. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Grade and other relevant marks, marking material and equipment, positioning of marks on graded lumber. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The correct application of the appropriate grade and other marks on the graded lumber ensures the correct identification of the grade properties of that lumber. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    These marks are applied in the prescribed manner and position to ensure correct identification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The graded lumber is correctly marked. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Strap parcels/stacks of graded and marked lumber for dispatch to next stage in the lumber mill. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Parcel/Stack sizes, strapping equipment and materials. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The correct strapping of stacks of lumber with grade marks ensures the effective movement of such stacks. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The strapping process is performed using the prescribed methods, equipment and materials. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The stacks ready for dispatch are correctly strapped. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An employed individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform the relevant responsible person in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. An unemployed Learner must arrange with the training provider for assessment.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor for this purpose by the ETQA.
  • The manner/method and source of providing the learning that will enable compliance with the requirements of this Unit Standard, must be accredited by the ETQA.
  • Moderation of the assessment will be performed in the manner and by the moderator(s) accredited for this purpose by the ETQA.
  • Assessment can be performed by means of oral testing, written tests and on-the-job observation. Formative assessment can be carried out during and after achievement of each specific outcome, and summative assessment at the conclusion of the training programme for this Unit Standard. Assessment will take place at a venue or workplace designated by the relevant assessor(s).
