PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is aimed at individuals who have a good understanding of the game and may include individuals who have completed the entry level coaching standard or individuals with a minimum of 5 years experience as professional football players who envisage further involvement in the sport in the capacity of club level coaching.

In achieving this unit standard, individuals will display the competency required to operate as a coach in order to teach the principles and skills of the game to individuals participating in the sport on beginner to intermediate level in particular as it applies to senior amateur and youth participants in the game.

Individuals qualifying against this unit standard will be able to apply coaching skills as a coach operating in the community, sport club or organisation on a regional level. Individuals will have a good understanding of the rules of the game and will be able to coach the technical skills of the game of football in a safe and structured manner according to coaching and practice plans.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:

  • Plan practice sessions for football coaching.
  • Conduct football coaching activities.
  • Reflect on performance as a coach.

    The importance of understanding the rules applicable to football is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The laws of football are explained to ensure fair play and understanding of the principles of the sport. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    For basic laws includes but is not limited to: correct terminology, etiquette on the field, laws pertaining to elements of football including movement, attack, defence, ball handling, recovery, positional restrictions, fair play, ethics, safety requirements and protocol of the game.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The official signals and control requirements applicable to role of the coach is explained. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Plan practice sessions for football coaching. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The role of the coach is explained in the context of the safety of the game on competitive level. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Individual contact, avoiding of personal injury, importance of effective learner supervision, correct warming up and preparation for the game, use of correct equipment and facilities, conduct on the field.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Individual and team objectives as well as principles of the enjoyment of the game are used in the planning of practice sessions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range for practice sessions includes coaching activities for beginner to intermediate players of the game.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Resources are planned in relation to the requirements of practice sessions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Relevant activities are planned within the practice sessions to ensure structure and time management of the session. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Activities should include warming up and cool down requirements, technical transfer of elements associated with the game of football including ball handling, goal shooting, movement and attack and defence skills.

    Warm up and cool down techniques are demonstrated to prepare for the game and to prevent personal injuries.

    Conditioning requirements are explained and demonstrated as they apply to the game of football.

    Appropriate mentoring and coaching methods are utilised to meet the needs of the athlete being coached.

  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements.
