PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
In achieving this unit standard, the learner will display the competency required to operate as an assistant coach or instructor in support of the coaching of the entry level skills of sailing to individuals including adults and children with no sailing competency, in order to generate interest and to encourage new entrance and the addressing of broad based sailing competency in the community.

The qualifying learner will be able to use own sailing knowledge and competency to explain and instruct the basis components of sailing, showing understanding of the principles of the sport and be able to demonstrate the skills and techniques required by beginners to the sport, in particular as it relates to dinghy, catamaran or keelboat instruction for "learn to sail" programmes.

Individuals qualifying against this unit standard will be able to utilise coaching skills in the capacity of assistant coach under the supervision of a coach qualified on club-coach level. Assistant coaching will be provided both inland and/or offshore under supervision and may include individuals or groups on shore or on the water, from a support boat or as part of the crew.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Describe the evolution and sociology of sailing as a sport.
  • Explain the safety requirements impacting on the sailing environment.
  • Utilise the basic techniques associated with sailing and sailing instruction.
  • Conduct coaching activities for beginners in sailing.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.

    Individuals accessing this unit standard are at minimum qualified at the South African Sailboat (SAS) National Sailing Scheme on NQF Level 3 for dinghy, catamaran or keelboat sailing. It is further assumed that learners accessing this unit standard will be competent swimmers and in possession of a first aid certificate so as to handle any emergency incidents in the coaching of beginner sailors.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Describe the evolution and sociology of sailing as a sport. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An overview of the history of sailing is provided to show understanding of its evolution. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Condensed history of the sport, the development of the sport, the basic principles of the sport, the application of the sport in terms of recreational and competitive application, sailing disciplines (dinghy, catamaran or keelboat) and the role of SAS and ISAF.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An overview of the sociological issues affecting sailing is provided to show the impact of sailing on social transformation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The benefits of sailing and the instruction of sailing to the individual are explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Transformation in the sport, recreational benefits, individual safety.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The role of the beginner coach is described.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The legal responsibilities are explained within the context of requirements of ensuring the safety of individuals participating in sailing. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Individual responsibilities including indemnities, insurance, importance of effective learner supervision, use of correct equipment and facilities, requirement of first aid competency.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of understanding the rules of safety for sailing is explained with specific reference to the impact on the individual if rules are ignored. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Watermanship, rescue techniques, unsafe conditions; weather, hazardous behaviour, emergency precautions; capsize recovery, man overboard recovery, sailing techniques and manoeuvres, safety precautions in the practicing of sailing techniques under supervision; weight distribution.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The use of the correct tools and equipment for preventative and remedial action relating to safety during participation are explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Types of equipment and equipment use, rigging, rope work, emergency equipment, life-jackets, buoyancy aids, correct clothing appropriate to weather conditions and boat sailed.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The role of equipment inspections to ensure accident prevention and risk management is explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Inspection of equipment including; painter, method for restraining mast, method for restraining centreboard, bailer, mainsheet stopper, rudder and tiller restraints, boat buoyancy.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The principles of sailing are explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Launching and recovery, sail handling, capsize recovery, man overboard recovery, sailing techniques and manoeuvres, risk assessment (weather conditions).
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Entry-level techniques of sailing are demonstrated. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Leaving the dock (sailing backwards), tacking, jibing, person-overboard retrieval, anchoring, capsize recovery, and slow sailing, sailing in circles around a buoy, heaving to, and reefing the main while under way.

    Rescue techniques are explained and demonstrated.

    Appropriate instruction methods are utilised to meet the needs of participants being coached.

    Instruction methods include relevant techniques as it applies to sailing manoeuvres and is applied from shore, from a support boat and as part of the crew.

    The core skills and techniques of sailing are taught to participants to enhance their enjoyment of the sport.

  • Anyone assessing an individual against this unit standard must meet the assessor requirements of the relevant ETQA. In particular, such assessors must demonstrate that they assess in terms of the scope and context defined in all the range statements.
  • Any institution offering learning towards this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • External moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
