PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The qualifying learner will apply their knowledge of the function and purpose of semaphore signals in the rail environment. They will be able to identify, observe and react to semaphore signals on single lines in a specific railway environment.

The qualifying learner will be capable of:
  • Explaining the use of semaphore signals on single lines.
  • Responding to the position of semaphore signals on single lines.
  • Explaining procedures to be used during sub-standard conditions.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that a learner is competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Explain the use of semaphore signals on single lines.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The types of semaphore signals used on single lines are identified according to train working rules.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The purpose of each type of semaphore signal is explained according to train working rules.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The location of semaphore signals is identified in relation to its sequence on the railway line.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Respond to the position of semaphore signals on single lines.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The position of semaphore signals on single lines is explained in terms of their meaning.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Semaphore signal/indicator positions include but are not limited to: danger position, all right position and caution position.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The expected response to the position of the semaphore signals on single lines is explained according to POSMOR and train working rules.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Responses include but are not limited to stop, proceed, slow down and caution next signal at danger.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The consequences of incorrect reaction to semaphore signals on single lines is explained according to POSMOR and train working rules.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Explain procedures to be used during sub-standard conditions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The position of the semaphore signals on single lines in case of an accident is explained according to train working rules.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Observation of semaphore signals on single lines during abnormal working is explained according to train working rules.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Procedures during sub-standard conditions are explained according to train working rules.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Sub-standard conditions include but are not limited to communication breakdown and signal defects.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

Identify and solve problems related to the appropriate response in reaction to a semaphore signal on a single line in which responses display that critical thinking is used for responsible decision making.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO WORKING
Work effectively with others as a member of a rail operations team to ensure the safe movement of a train using semaphore signals on single rail lines.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
