This unit standard is for persons in the Engineering, Construction and Energy Sectors.

This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the engineering, construction and energy environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the engineering, construction and energy environment.

    Interpret the fundamentals of refrigeration. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The vapour compression refrigeration cycle is explained in terms of its steps. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Refrigeration steps include; Evaporator, compressor, condenser and throttling.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The heat pump cycle is explained in terms of the purpose of each stage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The practical considerations for vapour compression systems are explained in terms of their limitations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Limitations include; Heat transfer and hot gas by-pass.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The absorption cycle is explained in terms of the process of each of the steps.

    Refrigerant compressors are identified and their operation explained in terms of type or classification. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Refrigerant compressors include:
  • Type; Displacement and dynamic.
  • Classification; Hermetic, semi-hermetic and open.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Evaporators are identified and categorised in terms of their operation.

    Category include; Direct expansion coils and liquid coolers.

    Throttling devices are identified and their operation and function explained in terms of their application.

    The food freezing step is described in terms of the type of food and food quality. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Refrigeration is described and its operation explained in terms of freezing processes in the food industry. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Freezing processes includes but is not limited to:
  • Air blast freezing, plate freezing, scrape surface freezing and cryogenic freezing.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The demand profile is assessed in terms of possible opportunities for savings.

    Identify and apply energy management opportunities.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Energy management potential is identified and implemented in terms of housekeeping opportunities. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    House keeping opportunities include but are not limited to:
  • Keeping heat transfer surfaces clean, repair line insulation, control calibration, specified refrigerant charge, unrestricted air movement and minimisation of simultaneous use of heating and cooling equipment.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Energy management potential is identified and implemented in terms of low cost opportunities. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Low cost opportunities include but are not limited to:
  • Increased evaporator temperature, reduced condensing temperature, automatic water treatment system provision, automatic controls upgrade, insulation upgrade, multispeed fan motors, heat pump alternative and lockable covers.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Energy management potential is identified and implemented in terms of retrofit opportunities. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Retrofit opportunities include but are not limited to:
  • Absorption equipment, heat pump use and the use of naturally available water.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Energy management opportunities are quantified in terms of energy and cost savings and payback.
