PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills, values and knowledge required by people in the sub-field of Forestry and/or wood technology who must be able to handle, mix and apply adhesive glue manually in finger-jointing and laminating facilities of a Lumber Mill.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Handle and mix glue manually and deliver to designated work station.
  • Apply glue manually to finger-joint profiles in accordance with company's procedures.
  • Position laminates for efficient glue application.
  • Feed glue to glue spreader for application to laminates.
  • Position laminates in pressing jigs.

    A learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate competency in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at ABET NQF Level 3 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole finger jointing and laminating area in the lumber mill with all its equipment and correct sequence of production phases.
  • The personnel involved in managing and performing the activities in the relevant workplace in the finger jointing and laminating area.
  • The raw materials processed and products produced in this specific work area.
  • The raw material as well as the product quality factors relevant in this area.
  • The work procedures and health and safety requirements relevant to this finger jointing and laminating area.
  • The environmental management principles relevant to this finger jointing and laminating area.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to the initiation of a beginner or completely uninformed person, into the general principles of the workings of finger jointing and laminating plant, and the specifics of these in the candidate's work area.

    The level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. NQF Level 1, is appropriate because:

    Glue is taken from the storeroom following the correct company procedure to the desired destination. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The handling of glue is in accordance with health, safety and environmental requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Glue is mixed safely in accordance with company's procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Glue mixture is taken to the desired destination taking into consideration the company's handling procedure. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Apply glue manually to finger-joint profiles in accordance with company's procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Personal Protective Clothing is worn to minimize injuries according to safety procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The application of glue is explained according to standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Glue is applied manually to finger-jointing profiler according to company's procedures.

    Position laminates in pressing jigs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Pressing jigs are prepared for use in accordance with company procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Laminates are positioned in pressing jigs to ensure proper pressure van according to company's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Laminates are positioned in pressing jigs according to safety procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 4 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency. Only an Assessor with suitable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
