PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The Unit Standard will be useful for people who wish to complete a NQF Level 2 Learnership in Lumber Milling.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to set up a green chip production facility. This includes setting up and operating green chip production equipment in order to produce wood chips, according to prescribed standards and specifications. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Competence in Mathematical and Communication skills equivalent to NQF Level 1.
  • An understanding of the detail of the Lumber Milling process, especially in the Wet Mill area.
  • Workplace procedures, health and safety measures, and environmental management principles equivalent to NQF Level 1.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Assemble tools, equipment and cutting tools for the chipping green lumber. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tools, equipment and cutting tools required for the chipping green lumber are assembled according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Pre-inspection procedures for chipping facilities are conducted according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The purpose of each tool, equipment and cutting tools required is correctly explained according to worksite procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The purpose of each tool, equipment and cutting tools required is correctly explained. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Set up chipping equipment and install the required cutting tools, to prescribed standards, in the prescribed manner.

    The correct operation of the green chip production facilities ensures that green wood of correct dimensions chips are produced. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct operation of the green chip production facilities ensures that green wood chips are produced of correct quality. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Monitor the throughput and quality to maintain prescribed standards.

    The correct through put and quality of green sawn products is achieved.

    The correct control of green chip production facilities ensures the production of green chips to prescribed through put and quality. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Carry out basic routine maintenance and lubrication of chip production and ancillary handling equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Maintenance and lubrication schedules are executed according to prescribed routine maintenance and lubrication schedules and reports. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct control of green chip production facilities ensures the production of green chips to prescribed through put and quality. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An employed individual who wishes to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to, or inform, the relevant responsible person in the relevant workplace, to request management to arrange for the assessment by the relevant assessor accredited for this purpose by the ETQA of the FIETA. An unemployed Learner must arrange with the training provider for assessment.
  • Anyone assessing a Learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor for this purpose by the ETQA.
  • The manner/method and source of providing the learning that will enable compliance with the requirements of this Unit Standard, must be accredited by the ETQA.
  • Moderation of the assessment will be performed in the manner and by the moderator/s accredited for this purpose by the ETQA.
  • Assessment can be performed by means of oral testing, written tests and on-the-job observation. Formative assessment can be carried out during and after achievement of each specific outcome, and summative assessment at the conclusion of the training programme for this Unit Standard. Assessment will take place at a venue or workplace designated by the relevant assessor(s).
