PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard reflects the skills, values and knowledge required by people in the sub-field of Forestry and/or wood technology who must be able to move/transport saws and cutters between Saw shop and processing machines/areas in a Lumber Mill.

People credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Explain the scheduling of the collection of used and the delivery of serviced saw blades and cutters in the Lumber Mill.
  • Explain how to identify used saw blades and cutters/knives at the work/holding areas of the Lumber Mill.
  • Explain the correct procedures used for moving saw blades and cutters between the Saw Mill and the Saw Shop.
  • Move/transport correctly saw blades and cutters/knives between the Saw Mill and the Saw Shop of the Lumber Mill.

    A Learner who wishes to enter a learning programme for this Unit Standard must be able to demonstrate:
  • Mathematical Literacy and Communication skills at ABET NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Understanding of basic activities of the Lumber Milling process, and of the activities performed in the Saw Doctor Shop.
  • Understanding of the specific requirements of the activities performed in the Saw Doctor Shop of the Lumber Mill.
  • Understanding of the equipment used in the Saw Doctor Shop of a Lumber Mill. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this Unit Standard covers:
  • The whole environment including equipment, tools and instruments that can be described as the Saw Doctor Shop in the Lumber Mill.
  • All the personnel involved in all the activities in the Saw Doctor Shop.
  • All the material that is handled and used in this work area, including cleaning materials and aids.
  • All the relevant work procedures and safety, health and environmental management requirements relating to the Saw Doctor Shop.

    The context of this Unit Standard relates to the training of a Learner at NQF Level 1 in Saw Doctoring and specifically to move/transport saw blades and cutters between the Saw Mill and the Saw Shop of a Lumber Mill.

    The Level assigned to this Unit Standard, i.e. NQF Level 1, is appropriate because:
  • For foundational competence the Learner has to demonstrate the use of recall and elementary comprehension skills.
  • For practical competence the Learner has to operate in closely defined contexts under close supervision.
  • For reflexive competence the Learner performs directed activities and has no responsibilities for the learning of others.

    The nature of the tasks performed, the scope of learning, involved and the required responsibility levels, are consistent with those generally defined for NQF Level 1.

    Saw blades and cutters/knives are moved carefully and safely to minimize damage and injuries. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The necessary documentation is completed for collections and deliveries according to standard operating procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An assessor, accredited with a relevant NQF Level 4 or higher qualification, will assess the learner's competency. Only an Assessor with suitable first hand experience in process operations will assess the learner's competency.
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.

    Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
