PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners accredited with this Unit Standard will understand and be able to use the various statistical concepts to conduct/perform statistical process control. They will also learn about sampling techniques to gather data for the purpose of compiling and interpreting charts.

Learners credited with this standard will be able to:
  • Explain statistical concepts pertaining to statistical process control.
  • Explain the importance and use of sampling of product characteristics to construct control charts.
  • Construct and interpret charts.

    An explanation is given of measures of spread and central tendency.

    Common and special causes of variation in processes are described for corrective/preventive action.

    Attributes, variables and related control charts are discussed in terms of their scope of applicaton to identify process problems.

    Process averages and control limits are calculated in order to construct the chart.

    Trends and/or points in 'out-of-control' situations are identified to determine root cause/s for corrective and preventive action.

    Process capability is calculated based on control limits and tolerance bands.

    A report on process stability, suitability and capability is prepared according to requirements and within an ethical framework.
