PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Individuals qualifying against this unit standard will be able to monitor the usage of coastal zones and to enforce legislation applicable to coastal zone utilisation in support of sustainability of South African coasts and ecologically sensitive areas.

In particular, learners will be able to:
  • Explain the rationale for integrated coastal management.
  • Use legislation and public awareness to protect ecologically sensitive areas.
  • Monitor and control driving on beaches.
  • Support the day-to-day implementation of integrated coastal zone management strategies.

    A report is prepared on man-made structures and developmental activities within the area of operation in which specific reference is made to the relevant Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) legislation.

    Actions are undertaken to protect coastal nesting and roosting sites from interference arising from human activity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Law enforcement actions are taken to prevent human impact leading to the degeneration of sensitive coastal areas.

    Actions are undertaken in conjunction with other applicable authorities to ensure the proper management of waste within the area of operation.
