PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this Unit Standard is to enable learners to understand and apply basic knowledge of all principles pertaining to the installation of hot water system, to interpret and apply building drawings, use basic pipe sizing, and to select plumbing system components and materials. These principles are critically important for the work to be performed by an installer.

Learners credited with this standard will be able to:
  • Apply principles pertaining to installation of a hot water system.
  • Apply basic pipe sizing to plumbing applications/operations.
  • Describe domestic solar and electrical hot water systems components and materials.
  • Identify and describe the uses of plumbing tools, components and materials.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This Unit Standard is for those working in a domestic context only.

    The application of basic plumbing hydraulic theory, the design and sizing of piping, and the selection of components are according to the following qualitative specifications:
  • SANS 10254.
  • SANS 10252 Part 1.
  • SANS 10106.
  • SANS 10400.

    Pressure includes:
  • Gauge, negative (vacuum) pressures, and their relationship to height.

    Pollution includes for:
  • Backflow prevention.

    Pipe sizing includes:
  • Determining site and structural constraints; select practical routing; determining available supply pressure.

    Valves include:
  • Ball; float; gate; diaphragm; control, air relief; vacuum relief; pressure reducing; pressure relief; temperature and pressure safety. Also: strainers/filters.

    Pumps include:
  • Hot water circulating; basic pump installations.

    Includes but is not limited to:
  • Pipe and fitting materials like copper, Polypropylene, galvanized mild steel (GMS), cross linked polyethylene (PE-X), polybutylene.

    Hot water systems include:
  • Pressurised storage; Roof tank fed; Combination; Solar (direct and indirect) two part (split); Insulation; and Circulating flow and return.

    An understanding of Water and Energy conservation.

    Health and safety - related to water heating systems.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The theory/role of pressure and flow principles are explained to show their importance in the installation of a water system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The use and importance of a pressure and a temperature gauge are demonstrated in the context of the activity being performed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Pressure and flow principles are applied to ensure that plumbing work performed is in accordance with relevant regulations requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The principles pertaining to the physical properties of water are explained to show its behaviour in different circumstances. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The principles of pressure loss are described in terms of how it affects the performance of a water supply system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The principle of thermal expansion is explained in terms of how it can impact on installation of a water system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Pollution prevention principles are applied so that cross connections and backflow are avoided. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to glycol contamination.

    Various types and sizes of pipes and fittings are identified and described in terms of their differences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The pipe sizes are determined to ensure correct flow rate, velocity and pressure. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Describe domestic solar and electrical hot water systems components and materials.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The types of solar and electrical hot water systems are identified and described in terms of their differences. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Components for the different systems are identified in terms of the functions they perform in their respective systems. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    In the case of solar water heating systems this includes but is not limited to basic valve; collectors heat exchangers, pump, storage units.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The reasons for their use in the different systems are explained to show how their incorrect usage will affect the system. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Identify and describe the uses of plumbing tools, components and materials.

    Ancillary plumbing materials and consumables are identified and their uses are described. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual unit standards as well as the integrated competence described in the qualification.

  • Air dissolved in water and how it is expressed.
  • Temperature of water and how it is expressed and measured, as well as the concepts of: thermal expansion linear/volumetric; dew point/condensation; boiling point/steam; freezing point/ice; density graph; latent heat of fusion; latent heat of evaporation; super heated water.
  • Corrosion and the causes and prevention of corrosion, material selection, and dezincification.
