PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
The purpose of this Unit Standard is to enable learners to understand and apply basic knowledge of all principles pertaining to the installation of hot water system, to interpret and apply building drawings, use basic pipe sizing, and to select plumbing system components and materials. These principles are critically important for the work to be performed by an installer.
Learners credited with this standard will be able to: |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
This Unit Standard is for those working in a domestic context only.
The application of basic plumbing hydraulic theory, the design and sizing of piping, and the selection of components are according to the following qualitative specifications: Pressure includes: Pollution includes for: Pipe sizing includes: Valves include: Pumps include: Includes but is not limited to: Hot water systems include: An understanding of Water and Energy conservation. Health and safety - related to water heating systems. |
Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Apply principles pertaining to installation of a water system. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The theory/role of pressure and flow principles are explained to show their importance in the installation of a water system. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The use and importance of a pressure and a temperature gauge are demonstrated in the context of the activity being performed. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Pressure and flow principles are applied to ensure that plumbing work performed is in accordance with relevant regulations requirements. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
The principles pertaining to the physical properties of water are explained to show its behaviour in different circumstances. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
The principles of pressure loss are described in terms of how it affects the performance of a water supply system. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 |
The principle of thermal expansion is explained in terms of how it can impact on installation of a water system. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 |
Pollution prevention principles are applied so that cross connections and backflow are avoided. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Includes but is not limited to glycol contamination. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Apply basic pipe sizing to plumbing applications/operations. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Various types and sizes of pipes and fittings are identified and described in terms of their differences. |
