PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners credited with this Unit Standard will be able to install and test cold and hot water supply systems in a domestic household. They will enhance the quality and effectiveness of their services within the plumbing sector. The acquisition of these skills will serve as the first stepping stone towards acquiring the skills required to maintain and repair cold and hot water supply systems NQF Level 4.

Learners credited with this standard will be able to:
  • Plan and prepare to install and test water supply systems.
  • Install water supply systems.
  • Test water supply systems.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Water supply systems refers to cold and hot water supply systems.
  • The learner will be able to install cold and hot water supply systems within a domestic environment.
  • The supply systems are for electric and solar water cylinders only.
  • Plumbing tools include but are not limited to:
    > Hand tools (measuring instruments, marking tools, holding tools, cutting tools, fastening, bending and cleaning tools), power tools (grinding, threading, cutting tools).
  • The installation and the testing applicable thereto, according to the following compulsory specification:
    > SANS 10252, Water Supply Installations for Buildings, Part 1.
    > SANS 10254.
    > SANS 10106.
    > SANS 10400.
  • Pipes include but are not limited to:
    > Galvanized mild steel (GMS), unplasticised polyvinylchloride (uPVC), copper, polypropylene, cross linked polyethylene (PE-X).
  • Cold and hot water pipe systems are pressure pipes, excluding drain pipes.
  • Cold water supply systems include direct balanced systems for domestic supply. Hot water supply systems include but are not limited to: direct, indirect and balanced systems for domestic supply.
  • Joining of pipes includes but is not limited to:
    > The cutting and threading of galvanized pipes, the joining of similar pipes and the joining of dissimilar pipe types.
  • Cold water pipe systems are installed both above and below ground.
  • Installation of pipes includes but is not limited to:
    > Thermal insulation, the fixing and support of pipe work and accommodation for pipe movement.
  • Cold water supply system fittings include but are not limited to:
    > Cocks, valves, taps, full way valves, house water stations, control valves, pressure reducing valves, expansion relief valves, in line filters and strainers etc.
  • Hot water fittings include but are not limited to:
    > Isolating valves, taps, full way valves, house water stations, thermostatic valves, pressure control valves, expansion relief valves, vacuum breakers, pressure and temperature safety valves.
  • Pipe fittings include but are not limited to:
    > Couplings, elbows, tees, reducers and adaptors. Hot water materials include but are not limited to: pipes, fitting, consumables, built-in items.
  • Existing services and built-in items that are to be identified and protected include but are not limited to:
    > Other plumbing pipes and fittings, fire protection systems, electrical cables, ducts and units, air-conditioning installations, communication ducts or cables, fixtures and fittings and non-potable water piping.
  • Types of hot water cylinders include but are not limited to:
    > Combination geysers, push through type, and high pressure geysers, gravity/header tank fed.
  • Installation of hot water cylinders includes but is not limited to:
    > The drip tray, pressure regulating valves and overflows.
  • All installations and testing of water supply systems applicable to the installation are performed in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tools, equipment and materials are selected in readiness to install and test water supply systems. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The work area is prepared and set out for the assembly of cold and hot water pipes and fittings in accordance with control positions and levels indicated in drawings or instructions received from the supervising plumber. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Existing services and built-in items are identified and protected against damage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Equipment and protective clothing is selected and prepared in accordance with legislative requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Tools and equipment are maintained in accordance with manufacturer's specifications and scheduled maintenance activities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Minimum quantities of plumbing materials are maintained in accordance with the requirements of the task at hand.

    Install cold water pipes and pipe fittings.

    Cold and hot water pipes and pipe fittings are identified and selected according to purpose and instructions.

    Support is provided for the accommodation of expansion, weight and movement in pipe work. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Pipes and pipe fittings are joined and assembled in accordance with industry standards and instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Cold and hot water pipes and pipe fittings are installed in accordance with regulations.

    The principles of hot water cylinders and their usage is described according to SANS 10254.

    Hot water cylinders are positioned in accordance with instructions.

    Hot water cylinders are installed in accordance with regulations.

    Test cold and hot water supply systems.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appropriate testing equipment and fittings are identified and used in accordance with testing methodology. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Cold and hot water pipes are flushed and disinfected in accordance with regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Pipes are pressure tested under supervision and in accordance with regulations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Irregularities identified during testing are referred to a qualified plumber according to procedure.
