PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications.

A competent learner will be able to:
  • Start machine for filling operations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of fluids used in vehicles.
  • Fill vehicle systems.
  • Identify and rectify filling faults. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    This unit standard is one of a series of unit standards for vehicle manufacturers the field of manufacturing and engineering. It is assumed that the learner is already competent to:
  • Select, use and care for engineering hand tools.
  • Select, use and care for engineering measuring equipment.
  • Keep the work area safe and productive. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following range information is applicable to the entire unit standard:
  • All work is performed under supervision at regular intervals and according to workplace specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.
  • Vehicle systems that require filling include cooling, brake, hydraulic, power steering and air conditioning systems.

    Additional range information is provided at specific outcomes and assessment criteria as necessary.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Fluid quantities in the filling machine are checked and reported in accordance with workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Printer roll quantity is checked and reported in accordance with workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The machine is started in accordance with manufacturer specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Indicators are checked to confirm the correct operation of the machine. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Deviations in required parameters are identified and corrected in accordance with manufacturer specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate knowledge of fluids used in vehicles.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The markings of different fluids are identified and described in terms of differentiating fluids from each other. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Fluids include coolants, lubricants and gasses.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The purpose of different fluids is described in terms of the function performed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Consequences of using incorrect fluids are described in terms of functionality of the systems and potential damage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Consequences of using incorrect quantities of fluids are described in terms of functionality of the systems and potential damage. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Methods for disposing various fluids are described in accordance with relevant health and safety legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Consequences of not disposing of the fluids correctly are described in terms of the potential impact on the environment and health and safety of personnel.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The filling machine is connected to the relevant component in accordance with manufacturer specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The machine is started in accordance with manufacturer specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A filling report is generated and confirmed to meet manufacturer specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Deviations to manufacturer specifications are identified and corrective action is taken in accordance with workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Filling nozzles are removed and vehicle systems are sealed in accordance with manufacturer specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Identify and rectify filling faults.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The source of the problem is identified from the filling report and visual inspections. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The fault is recorded and visually displayed in accordance with workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Fluid is drained from the relevant system and refilled according to manufacturer specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A new filling report is generated and confirmed to meet manufacturer specifications.

    Restore the work area.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The work area is restored in accordance with workplace and SHE requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Restoring work area includes packing away of tools and equipment and cleaning the work area.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tools and equipment are cleaned and stored in accordance with workplace and SHE requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Consequences of not leaving the workplace in the appropriate state are explained in terms of safety hazards and production. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    Essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria. This means that for the most part, the possession or lack of the knowledge can be directly inferred from the quality of the candidate's performance.
