PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners accredited with this standard will be able to install a sliding system after preparing for it, assembling the outer frame and the sashes/openings. Learners will become acquainted with the various sliding systems, their components and installation requirements. Learners will work safely and complete the assembly in workshops.

Learners credited with this standard will be able to:
  • Prepare for installation of a sliding system.
  • Assemble the outer frame of the sliding system.
  • Assemble the sashes of the sliding system.
  • Install the system.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Sliding systems refer to both sliding doors and sliding windows within an aluminium frame, including shower doors. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare for installation of a sliding system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Buildings plans are studied to obtain measurements of opening sizes for system to be installed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Opening sizes are measured/re-measured on site to confirm measurements prior to starting work. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Customer requirements/preferences are confirmed prior to manufacturing the system. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Requirements and preferences include but are not limited to type of glass, colours of frames, design issues, specific installation arrangements.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Windload limitations are calculated as per the system to be installed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The conformity of the proposed system to building regulations and SANS standards is checked to ensure safety of the proposed installation. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Conformity to SANS codes include DSS SANS 1044 and Regulation Part N 2006 Edition 3 and regulations of the Association of Architectural Aluminium Manufacturers of South Africa (AAAMSA)
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    All safety requirements are complied with in the preparation phase, assembly phase and the installation phase. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Safety requirements include the correct use of personal protective clothing.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Assemble the outer frame of the sliding system. 
    OUTCOME NOTES 
    This activity will be performed in a workshop and on the customer's premises/on-site.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The material for the assembly is cut according to the cutting list. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Material includes sections, profiles.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The material is machined as per requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Machining includes routering, milling and cutting.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The outer frame is assembled as per measurements and type of system. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Assemble the sashes/openings of the sliding system in a workshop.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The glass is measured and cut according to size. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The glass is edge worked to ensure that it is fit for glazing purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Appropriate gaskets are used as per requirements of the system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Setting blocks are used during glazing to ensure accurate glazing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The sashes/openings are glazed and assembled as per system requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Hardware is inserted where required/applicable. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Hardware includes but is not limited to handles, locks, wheels, stoppers.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Quality checks are performed to ensure that the sashes/openings are operational as per manufacturer's requirements.

    The system is packaged and transported as per procedure to ensure that there are no breakages and/or problems with the assembly.

    Install the system.

    Appropriate tools are selected and used to install the system as per system requirements.

    Appropriate scaffolding/harness is used to perform the installation.

    The installation is checked as per procedure to ensure quality workmanship.

    Customer's premises are cleaned and maintained to ensure customer satisfaction and service.

  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise.
