PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable learners to use thermal styling techniques to provide a hair styling service.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the factors that influence styling.
  • Prepare and consult with client to agree desired style.
  • Perform a roller setting service.
  • Perform a tonging service.
  • Perform a blow drying service.

    Dressing includes but is not limited to using brush and/or comb to achieve volume, lift, curl and wave movement as well as backcombing and/back-brushing.

    Perform a thermal iron service. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Thermal iron techniques include but are not limited to:
  • Maintaining correct temperature according to hair type.
  • Keeping the iron free of product build up.
  • Using the correct pressure and angle along hair length.
  • Taking meshes of hair which suit the size of the thermal iron.
  • Parting sections cleanly to enable a consistent and even smoothing design of the hair from root to end - curly, wavy or straightened.
  • Controlling the hair effectively.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA in accordance with the current ETQA regulations.
