PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will enable learners to perform an advanced hair colouring service, using fashion techniques.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Explain hair lightening processes (bleaching).
  • Perform a lightening colour service (bleach) using a variety of techniques.
  • Explain advanced colour techniques.
  • Perform a colour service using three different colours and a variety of advanced colour techniques.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Shampoo, Condition and treat scalp and hair at NQF Level 2.
  • Identify disorders of the skin and hair at NQF Level 3.
  • Perform a hair colouring service at NQF Level 3.

  • Foil, comb, cap, weaving, slicing, surface painting, blocking.

    Explain hair lightening processes (bleaching). 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Principles of using bleach to lighten hair are explained in terms of anatomy and chemistry. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Principles include but are not limited to:
  • Ingredients of bleach preparation.
  • Action of bleach on hair shaft.
  • Action of bleach on pigment.
  • Effect of different bleach types.
  • Stages of bleaching and lightening.
  • Active life of a bleach once applied.
  • Use of heat and its effect on the bleaching process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Selection of an appropriate bleaching process and product is explained according to manufacturer's instructions and industry standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Selection includes but is not limited to:
  • Diagnosis of natural hair colour.
  • Dealing with the problems of natural orange pigment and prior tints.
  • Dealing with the problem of creeping oxidation.
  • Hair porosity and texture.
  • Selection of appropriate processing time.

    The bleaching process is explained in terms of its practical application. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The bleaching process includes but is not limited to:
  • Mixing hydrogen peroxide into bleach powder.
  • Applying bleach according to manufacturers instructions.
  • Implementation of appropriate processing time.

    Perform a lightening colour service (bleach) using a variety of techniques. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Lightening service includes but is not limited to:
  • Full-head service.
  • Highlighting/lowlighting service.
  • Virgin hair.
  • Retouch.

    Techniques include but are not limited to:
  • Slicing, surface painting and weaving highlights.
  • Cap method of applying highlights.
  • Tipping (also called frosting or shoe-shine).
  • Blocking.
  • Bleach bath.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Selected lightening products are mixed according to manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The product is applied according to manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Lightening product's development is monitored, timed and checked according to the desired outcome. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Hair is rinsed to avoid further lightening or damage to hair. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The final lightening result is checked on dry hair and toner is applied if required according to workplace procedures.

    Explain advanced colour techniques.

    Advanced colour techniques are explained in terms of functions performed to achieve a particular colour effect. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Selection of appropriate advanced colour techniques is explained in line with client analysis and requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Advanced colour techniques are explained in terms of the process of implementation and the impact on the client. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Perform a colour service using three different colours and a variety of advanced colour techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Client's hair is prepared for the advanced colour service according to manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Correct quantities of colouring products are mixed and applied using the selected technique according to manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Colour development is monitored, timed and checked according to the desired outcome and manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Colour is emulsified and thoroughly removed according to manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Final colour result is checked on dry hair according to industry and customer satisfaction standards.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA in accordance with the current ETQA regulations.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Other ETQAs who have a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA would be responsible for moderation of achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this qualification.
