PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is aimed at individuals involved in orienteering in mapped areas through the use and application of mapping, compass and navigational skills in order to conduct an Adventure-based learning or recreational experience to participants whilst maintaining safety in order to provide a quality experience to participants.

Persons credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Interpret and use a map by identifying scale.
  • Use a map to orientate your position and course.
  • Orienteer through demarcated terrain.
  • Deal with common emergencies and local hazards.

    Different types of maps are identified, assessed and an appropriate map is chosen to ensure that the relevant factors are considered in the planning of a route. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Symbols and information on the map are interpreted to eliminate possible errors and inaccuracies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The map is oriented with the aid of the surroundings without the use of a compass.

    A Map is oriented to surroundings with and without the use of a compass.

    The procedures to attend to medical emergencies and injuries are explained in accordance with organisational policies.

    The selection of clothing is explained as it applies to different weather conditions and regions.

    Minimal impact on the environment is practiced in order to preserve the terrain.

    UNIT STANDARD NOTES 
    Where this unit standard is utilised in the Adventure-Based Learning environment, learners operating from a Centre-based environment must demarcate the navigation area to participating groups prior to the implementation of the activity.

    In areas where dangerous animals or poisonous plants occur, it is required that participants are briefed by means of informative sessions.
