PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard are required by people in the field of building and civil construction. Learners should be able to perform duties in installing access equipment for construction work effectively and safely.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Erect and dismantle a system scaffold with ladder access.
  • Erect and dismantle a trestle scaffold.
  • Erect and dismantle an extension ladder.
  • Make use of a step ladder.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are already competent in the following:
  • Communication at NQF Level 2.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Stated with Specific Outcomes/Assessment Criteria to which they apply. The typical scope of the unit standard includes:
  • Scaffolds must all be erected in accordance with relevant safety regulations and SANS Codes of Practice (i.e. 10085 1988 for scaffolding).
  • Maximum safety height of scaffolding is 2 meters. If this safety height is exceeded additional regulatory requirements will have to be met.
  • Erecting and dismantling scaffolding include system scaffolds with ladder access, trestle scaffolds, and extension ladders, and the use of step ladders.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Erect and dismantle a system scaffold with ladder access. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The area where the scaffolding is erected is level and free of obstruction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Sole plates are positioned on compacted ground in order to eliminate the possibility of unsafe movement. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Adjustable jacks are in position to receive scaffolding components to meet safety requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Horizontal components are levelled and vertical components are plumbed in accordance with site conditions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Scaffolding components are secured through appropriate bracing in accordance with site conditions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Scaffold, toe boards and safety/hand rails are properly positioned on working platforms in accordance with legal and safety requirements.

  • There is maximum spacing of supports for boards.
  • All couplings are tight.

    All components are stacked when dismantled in the correct order.

    Erect and dismantle a trestle scaffold. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Scaffold boards are free of damage and obstruction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The area where the scaffolding is erected is level and free of obstruction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Trestles are levelled and stablised in accordance with safety and legal requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The height, width and length is according to specification and the gap between trestles and the working plane is not more than 75mm. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The locating pins are inserted and collapsible stays are locked in position. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Scaffold boards and trestles are stacked when dismantled in accordance with safety and legal requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The trestle scaffold is inspected, used and defects reported to meet requirements reflected in checklist, statutory regulations and organisational procedures respectively. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Erect and dismantle an extension ladder. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The correct type of ladder is selected in accordance with height and specific task requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The area where the extension ladder is erected is level and free of obstruction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The ladder is erected to extend at least 90mm above the working area in accordance with legal requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The base distance is approximately 1/4 of the height to the platform. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The extension ladder is inspected, used and defects reported to meet requirements reflected in checklist, statutory regulations and organisational procedures respectively. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Erect and dismantle a step ladder. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The learner faces the ladder when ascending or descending. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    One hand is used to hold onto the stile. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The ladder is climbed one rung at a time. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Braces or ropes are fully extended. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The step ladder is inspected, used and defects reported to meet requirements reflected in checklist, statutory regulations and organisational procedures respectively. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the Qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual Unit Standards as well as the integrated competence described in the Qualification.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
