PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are required to make different types of hollow earrings or earrings with filigree wire.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Plan the manufacturing process for the earrings.
  • Prepare the components for the manufacture of the earrings.
  • Assemble the components of the earrings.
  • Finish the earrings. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following range applies to this unit standard:
  • Both of the following ranges of earring categories must be selected:
    > Hollow earrings.
    > Earrings using wire filigree.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Plan the manufacturing process for the earrings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The design for the earrings is analysed and interpreted in terms of given requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range of the forms of the designs must include at least one of the following:
  • A drawing.
  • A photograph.
    Or
  • A model.

    Range of hollow earrings must include:
  • A pair of hoop earrings.
  • A pair of half dome earrings.
  • A pair of ball earrings.

    Range of another pair of earrings must include:
  • A pair of earrings with filigree wire.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The tools, materials and equipment needed in the manufacturing process are identified and selected in accordance with the production requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The precious metal is weighed and the cost calculated in terms of relevant metal prices. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of not adhering to correct planning, analysing, interpretation of the design and calculation of production cost are described in terms of the potential impact on productivity, cost and end product.

    Prepare the components for the manufacture of the earrings.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tools, material and equipment are selected and prepared for the components to make the earrings in accordance with the specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The metal is prepared to industry quality requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The components for the earrings are prepared to design specifications and within an agreed timeframe. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of not adhering to the correct preparation, housekeeping and safe working practices are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Assemble the components of the earrings.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tools, material and equipment are selected and prepared to assemble the metal components in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The tools and equipment are used in terms of their design and manufacturers specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The components for the earrings are assembled to design specifications and within an agreed timeframe. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of not adhering to correct workmanship, housekeeping and safe working practices, are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Finish the earrings. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tools, material and equipment are selected and prepared in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The earrings are given the desired surface finish according to jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The fastening mechanisms are attached in terms of jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of applying the wrong finish are described in terms of deviation from the design specifications and the potential impact on productivity and quality.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
