This unit standard will be useful to people who are required to create jewellery utilizing Perspex and non-precious metals.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Plan the manufacturing process for the jewellery pieces.
  • Prepare the components for manufacture.
  • Assemble the components.
  • Finish the jewellery pieces.

  • All three of the following ranges of jewellery categories must be selected:
    > Earrings.
    > Pendant.
    > Bangle.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Plan the manufacturing process for the jewellery pieces. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The design for the jewellery pieces is analysed and interpreted in terms of the specified requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The forms of the designs must include at least one of the following:
  • A drawing.
  • A photograph.

    The tools, Perspex, other materials and equipment needed in the manufacturing process are identified and selected in accordance with the production requirements.

    The metal is weighed and the cost calculated in accordance with relevant material prices.

    Occupational hazards and risks are identified and dealt with in accordance with specified requirements.

    Housekeeping and safe working practices are adhered to and demonstrated in accordance with occupational health and safety requirements.

    The consequences of not adhering to correct preparation, housekeeping and safety practices are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality.

    Prepare the components for the manufacture of the jewellery pieces.

    Tools, material and equipment are selected and prepared for the preparation of the Perspex and metal components to make the jewellery pieces in accordance with the given requirements.

    The metal is prepared to specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The components for the jewellery pieces are prepared to design specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Work is conducted in accordance with agreed timeframes.

    The consequences of not adhering to the correct preparation, housekeeping and safety practices, are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality.

    Assemble the components.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tools, material and equipment are selected and prepared to assemble the Perspex and metal components in accordance with the specified requirements.

    The tools and equipment are used in terms of its design and manufacturers specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The components are assembled to design specifications within an agreed timeframe. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of not adhering to correct workmanship, housekeeping and safety practices, are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Finish the jewellery pieces. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tools, material and equipment are selected and prepared in accordance with the specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The jewellery pieces are given the desired surface finish according to specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The fastening mechanisms are attached in terms of the specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of applying the wrong finish, and thus deviating from the design specifications, are described in terms of the potential impact on customer satisfaction and cost.
