PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are required to prepare the metal surface or setting area for setting gemstones. The very basic ability to sand or clean the surface or area to the required texture in order to mark out, drill and use setting tools and equipment to seat gemstones into jewellery, is normally the biggest hurdle for aspiring setters to achieve the desired result and add the necessary value to the jewellery item.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Prepare the setting area to seat the gemstones.
  • Prepare and use the setting tools to fit/seat the gemstones.
  • Seat the gemstones for setting.

    Prepare the setting area to seat the gemstones.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Surface texturing, sanding, measuring and marking tools, materials and equipment and their attachments are selected and prepared in accordance with industry standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tools, equipment and their attachments are used in accordance with jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The setting area to seat the gemstones is prepared in accordance with jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Occupational hazards and risks are identified and dealt with in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Housekeeping and safe working practices are adhered to and demonstrated in accordance with occupational health and safety requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The consequences of not adhering to correct preparation, housekeeping and safe working practices are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The consequences of choosing the wrong tools, materials and equipment, or omitting to determine that the actual setting is a complete wrong fit, are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity, customer satisfaction, quality and cost.

    Prepare and use the setting tools to fit/seat the gemstones.

    Setting tools, materials, equipment and their attachments are selected and prepared in accordance with specified requirements.

    Setting tools, materials, equipment and their attachments are used to remove the metal to accommodate the gemstones in accordance with jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Setting tools are prepared and used in accordance with jewellery manufacturing requirements to seat the gemstones. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The gemstones are seated according to setting quality standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequences of incorrect preparation for the accommodation of gemstones are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality.

    Seat the gemstones for setting.

    Risk of damage to gemstones whilst setting, is explained in terms of cost, production and customer satisfaction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Seating tools, materials and equipment are used to seat the gemstones in the setting, according to jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The gemstones are seated for the required setting in accordance with jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The gemstones are inspected and checked for compliance in terms of setting quality standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequences of using incorrect seating tools, materials and equipment, or seating the gemstones unevenly and out of format, are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality.
